Best signal/range wireless router for home wireless LAN

I'm looking for a wireless router with good signal strength/range. I was unable to get the Linksys WRT54G to go over forty feet until I added a booster antenna. No line of sight between the wireless router and the one wireless computer on the same floor - two drywall walls with fiberglass, and metal AC ductwork in the ceilings of the hallway between the rooms.

What makes and models have better signal strength/range?

Thank you,
Daniel

KronosTM,

Excellent links and information. I did not see mention of brand name thus am I correct to assume that signal strength and range does not vary between manufactures of wireless APs?

Is there a AP vendor comparsion chart available?

Daniel

<< am I correct to assume that signal strength and range does not vary between manufactures of wireless APs? >> Yes, you are correct.
They vary but not much. Only the "outdoor" APs have higher output power.
If there's a chart then I'm unaware of it. It's pretty hard though, since thtis is quite new terrain. Anyway, most RF modules and processors are the same, and that's what's important. Just to make a shot in the dark, I'd say there aren't currently more than 20-30. The differences are mostly in software , cases and minor electronic things.

KronosTM,

You have been very helpful.

I'm awarding the points to you.

BTW, I did find a couple of comparison charts.
