Find a list of Artists and the Music Genre they belong to...
I've been looking... and am still looking.
In working to organize the many music files that I've ripped from my CD's, I've run into a problem.
Many people consider different music artists to belong to different genre categories.
And many can possibly belong to more than one.
I've been looking all over the net for a resource that will tell me what genre a music artist should belong to.
I need a reliable place.
I want to organize my music by genre, then artist, then album....
Any ideas on a good resource to find what genre an artist belongs to?

1. I agree with you. It is MY list. And my opinion is the primary factor. But I know that there HAS to be SOMEWHERE on the net where someone else has listed the "popular belief" of genre for all artists. I, of course, will change anything that I totally do not agree with. But, so far, I have been doing it manually by hand... the problem is... I'm not always sure what to classify everything as. For instance, today I crossed on an old Chicago album I have. I'm not really sure what they would be... rock? classic rock? pop? pop-rock? polka?
This is where my problem starts. To have a "guide" is what I'm looking for.
2. I don't use iTunes. So I can't count on that. Maybe I should start using iTunes again. We'll see... but that's besides the point.
I am sure there is a resource somewhere. I just went to www.allmusic.com and you can search for a group and it will return the songs and their genre. Personally, I love iTunes because it does this for you automatically.
What are you using for a music player?
I use Winamp.
But I rip my CD using some other small software.
It pulls the info for the CD from "freedb.org" ... but this has no genre listing.
allmusic.com will work for now I think. I'll just use it....
I was hoping for some other options... but not sure what was available.
I'll check out iTunes as well. But I didn't want a program that would input ANYTHING about itself into the ID3 tags... Just the artist and song info.
Does iTunes insert any info about iTunes in the ID3 tags? If so, what?
I'm not anti-Apple at all... I dislike Microsoft far more.
Apple's stuff always seems to work correctly out-of-the-box and stays that way... until completely out-dated.
But I don't have an iPod anymore... so I don't need to sync with it...
I'll leave this up a little longer, but most likely, you'll end up with the points.
What you may need is a tool that uses CDDB. Winamp and most media players that connect to the internet have this feature, but since you have extracted the mp3 off your discs without reatining the disc info.
CDEX is a great free tool can extract the data directly (digital) from an Audio CD, to mp3 or wav.
CDex also supports many audio file tag formats like the ID3V1 and ID3V2 tags, which can be automatically inserted as part of the ripping process.

I know it might be a pain in the butt, but because this is YOUR list, and not someone else's, I would suggest updating the genre of each album manually according to your taste. That way, when you play your lists by genre, you will get to listen to the exact type of music you are looking for. I am sure that there is a list our there that you could update by, but in my experience, they are never really 100% right on with what I would classify certain music, IMO.
