Zune playlists

I am well aware the Zune is terrible but I got a 30gb a few years ago for 79 bucks.

The interface is brutal, whenever I remove songs from my hard drive, the zune "forgets" the playlist, even though the songs are all sitting happily on the device. Worse still, "my collection" keeps the playlist, but when I try to sync it to the device, nothing is copied.

I've played around with explorer access hacks so I can see what's on the zune through explorer, and I have the playlists in zpl format. Any way to just copy them directly to the device?

I have a zune, and I find no problems with it. Make sure you updated to the latest firmware because what you are saying is a common symptom of older firmware bugs. Once both the software and firmware are updated, you everything should sync properly. If its not wipe your zune resynch everything. Also if you want you can use winamp playlists those work too

just upgraded the software and firmware before syncing, so that's not it.

My problem is I've got an older laptop with only 40gb hd, so I've got my mp3's saved on DVD. I have to copy them in batches to the hd, then to the zune, but when I delete the previous batch to make room for the next, the playlist keeps the names of the now-vanished files, is still in my collection. (and checking the raw zpl file, the data is there. But when I slide it over to the device, it will say sync in progress, but when unplugging the zune, nothing is in the playlist section.

(The playlist section works, because anything actively on my hd and in my collection has a functioning playlist)

Oh, thats the problem. Its just like how the ipod works..

the ZUNE and its software operate in the same way as the ipod and iTunes, removing the tracks from the computer will remove them from the ZUNE at the next sync.

Of course, it should be possible to set the preferences for the ZUNE software to NOT automatically sync when connected.
If you can do that, you will be able to use the computer as a charging station only.
