Is it possible to covert the m4a audio file formats used by apple tunes to mp3? Likewise can the windows wma be coberted to mp3? I have most of the origanl music CDs that the files were impoerted from but I dont really want to go through the pain of relaoding all the CDs again through another programme. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Cdex is a great little tool that reads your cd and will convert to mp3.
You have to insert teh cd name and file names for the end results,
it may also do WMA if on a cd.
All tracks have to be on cd.

I have looked into your question again noting the silence :)
It is the default, and most commonly used format for compressing audio CDs for Apple's iPod and iTunes (Extension .m4a). Apple uses the AAC format for the files they sell on the iTunes Store, however these files are protected with DRM and stored in a proprietary .m4p container that is only compatible with Apple's own iPod device, or iTunes.
AAC is also used as the standard audio file for Sony's Playstation 3 and as the default audio codec for the .m4v format that Apple employs in its iTunes Store video files.
This should solve it for you easy and quick, play them and record from your speakers, in the settings add a time of 120 minutes even though you wont use it, and add stereo mix as the source, once you see the grapgh its working and ready, save to mp3..

I should put my boring anecdote here: In converting from AAC to Mp3 you are converting to an inferior format. AAC is not Apple's format it's MPEG's, and AAC was designed to superceed the now ageing Mp3 format (also MPEG's). AAC is also not proprietry to Apple or I iPod . These files will play in just about all the PC players (even Uncle Bill's WMP) and any new portable player worth its salt should play AAC files. There are some issues with DRM but Mp3 and WMA files also have these same issues -- but now that DRM is being scrapped those issues will be short-lived.
Unless I needed to play my music in a down-market Mp3 player that didn't play AAC files, I would keep my entire library in the highest quality format, AAC.
