Might some capture software or other software installed that will alter the wav.
Try changing the volume from Control panel Audio and sounds>Audio tab there is three volume settings here one for default one for recording and one for midid playback
also check that Microsoft GS wavetable SW Synth is listed in the panel click to Use only Default devices
