Question

How Rip Audio from DVD to CD - for Free?

Asked by: jrbanderson

Hello,
I have a Dvd of a concert.  When I open it in Windows Explorer, it shows 2 folders: Audio_TS with no files inside, and Video_TS with several VOB and IFO files inside.

I would like to take just the audio from the DVD and put it on a CD to play in my vehicle.  My vehicle can play MP3s.  Just wondering if there is anything out there that would do this for free.  Thank you so much!!

I found the easiest free solution was to use Audacity.
Audacity is a free audio editor. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, and MP3 files, and more.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Audacity
There i smany tools that can decrypt and extract the audio out of video but some save them as raw wave which is very big file. Since you'd like mp3
Workaround is to use a program that extracts the audio out
Video to MP3 Converter
http://lifehacker.com/software/featured-windows-download/rip-audio-from-a-dvd-to-mp3-with-free-dvd-mp3-ripper-322151.php
http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/guides/dvd/extract-audio-from-video-to-mp3.htm
http://www.allformp3.com/xilisoft-dvd-audio-ripper/rip-dvd-audio.htm

once you have your mp3 you can use Audacity to split them if you like.
Then burn to cd as an audio cd using your default burner for CD. If you need more details let me know.
Regards Merete

Thanks.  I tried the life hacker and dvdvideo soft to no avail.  I seem to have a few large VOB files on the the dvd.  I am not sure exactly what to do with these programs to get things to work.  The lifehacker just hung up, and the dvdvidesoft said it didnt support that type of file..thanks again

Right how much ram do you have?
It's best to have nothing else running when performing these tasks.
again Audacity is simple more work but easy work,
open audacity and choose stereo mix/ new project stereo audio
play the dvd and record the sections you want and then stop export as mp3,
you can select the end bits and fade out edit the pieces you want etc.
I always prefer to do things by hand garranteed to work in my books all these automated things often crash.
You Could play individual vobs in Media player classic explore the DVD from my computer put the view to details and select the main VIDEO_TS 1 one at time.,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Player_Classic
I use tools that use little to none system resources.
