Question

Why does ripping dvd create more than one file?

Asked by: xamian

I'm using Wondershare DVD Ripper Premium to rip my dvd collection (for archival purposes of course).  The program works great except for one thing. If the converted video file is larger than about 1 GB the program creates separate files for the remaining portion of the video.  I have it set to "Merge All Files" but the file size seems to max out at 1gb.  I tried looking for info on the wondershare site bu they don't mention anything about this.  Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

Not a user of this tool but any tool that copies a DVD decrypts  the main movie parts to probably 2 vobs.

this wondershare offers a guide to " how to "with regards to the output files. look into the video scale and output format before starting, it is a learn as you go
Please click "Help" then choose "Help Content" and you will see the user manual.
from the source>
Wondershare has 3 parts
The first one is on the main interface, which can be used in the output format and settings panel. << look into this one

I converted my DVDs to Xvid format at 720x480.  Does the format have anything to do with this?

Hi

I have just installed a trial version of this to test for you.
I managed to convert a file for xbox 360 (just a WMV) that was over 1GB in 1 file.

Just testing now with xvix on your settings and seems good so far but have you also checked the apply to all box? I think the software treats every title of the dvd as 1 file but when you select merge into 1 title and apply to all it will then do what you want to.

Will reply in the morning when this file has done, will let you know how I go.

As I mentioned in my opening question; I have it set to "Merge All Files" but it still creates more than one file.

OK I think I may have figured this out.  The problem is the file format.  Fat32 should allow for a single file to be up to 4GB in size, so I should be able to have a ripped DVD thats over 1Gb in size.  I ran a test of converting the same movie in XVID and WMV formats and the WMV was able to contain the movie in one file vs Xvid which created two files.
Can anyone confirm my suspicions?

are you ripping teh entire DVD in one go or just the main vobs?
Vobs are just another name for mpeg2
The new DVD have many layers do you get to choose just one vob or the extras that come with it?
720x480.<< will produce a large file, try reducing the video scale. to say 640 x480 will still gve a good quality in full screen
Xvid is a great format for quality so no problems there it's the video scale
I use other video tools as one is usually never enough

Hi again

yeah its definatley the file format, as i said before the wmv file was not an issue but when i encoded a xvid on the settings you have it split them up to 1gb file max each for some reason and there are no options to change this?? why i dont know?

I am now trying to do one on mpeg2 for you as this should be fine but the files will be a bit larger than using xvid or wmv, just depends on how large you want the movies really.
will update when it has done

by: QEMS2Posted on 2009-10-16 at 01:03:46ID: 25587659

Just tried the mpeg2 and didnt work, had more than 1 file.
I would either use the wmv setting or look for a different program to use, there are LOADS out there and maybe some with better features that allow you more control over the settings so you can merge to 1 file fully?
Just a thought

Yea, it's definitely the xvid format.  Thanks for confirming this.  I'm gonna try MP4 to see if that will work for me.  Thanks
