Question

5 years late so basic DVD CD burning questions. (Real Player and Nero 7)

Asked by: nickg5

I have not burned a CD in over 5 years and never a DVD. I'm ready to start now (I think it's time since my table top DVD recorder from 2006 is still in the box and obsolete probably by now - I'll use that for VHS transfer), so I'll go question by question. I've got Real Player and Nero 7.0.
I'm not looking for alternatives right now, I want to get a audio and video disc from my Real Player library, play them everywhere there is to play them (devices) and then take a look at alternatives to quality, etc.
My Real Player, in conjunction with a website, allowed downloading of some videos. I've got these 5 videos in my Real Player library. I have Nero 7.0 on my system and I opened the burn/transfer window.
My basic questions here are:
Real Player downloaded these videos as Flash Video files.
1. it appears that the volumes were downloaded based on the same volumes that were playing on the website videos. Right? One was low, no matter how high I adjusted the volume and 1-2 were too high and had to be adjusted downward in volume. So, all 5 are slightly different volumes.
2. I'm going to first burn an audio disc. Will Nero adjust the volumes for me or will I need to do it manually when using the burning software? One of the videos is a little low in volume. I'd want that one higher in volume and not the other 4 adjusted to match the lower one. It is a bit too low.
3. How close to the actual website video quality has Real Player downloaded these videos and how close to the actual Real Player quality will Nero burn them? And can I expect that same quality when playing on external devices?
4. A previous question brought up the subject of resolution. How do I know the resolution of the videos on the website, the resolution Real Player downloaded with (or to) and what about Nero? Will the final product, after transfer, be the same resolution as the original videos from the website?
5. Will Nero change the Flash files to some other type of file automatically? to what? why? Or do I do that myself some how and what type files do I need to hopefully play on a table top DVD or CD player, car player, portable player or computer?

1. The volume of the video or file you downloaded has nothing to do with the volume you were playing it with. The sound is embedded into the file and no matter where you play it, you can expect it to be on the lower/upper range. There are programs out there to boost sound, but I haven't used them too much.

2. When burning Audio/Video with Nero, you won't get a chance to increase/lower volume. Nero burns the data as it receives it from the file. If you want to burn with higher volume, you'll need to run some kind of sound booster, and re-record the audio, or, re-encode the sound with higher volume and then burn it.

3. Yes you can expect the same quality. Quality is only degraded when you encode/compress videos or sometimes changing the format of the video. In this case, you're safe.

4. Yes. To figure out the resolution of the video, right click the video file in question in windows explorer and go to properties. On the advanced tab you will see Resolution:  800X640.. etc.

5. This question is King. It encompasses all the other questions, and basically to view your video in mostly any device out there (cannot guarantee ALL devices), you'll need to convert/encode/compress the video into something all DVD players can read. Nero won't do this for you. For this, there are vast amounts of tools onliine which you can google (type on google: "convert .*extension of your video file* to dvd")

Depending on the convertion process your video may suffer from little to medium quality degradation depending on the settings you choose while converting.  You can convert your video to .avi, .mpeg, .mpeg4.. and so on. Once you get the correct extension, you can get Nero to 'Burn Video' and add your video file.\

Hopefulyl I answered some/most/all of your questions

if this were me - I would just try it and see what happens.
if nero has volume adjustment it will be in the menu /configuration (itunes has something similar)
I'm pretty  sure  nero cannot convert from Flash to dvd/mpg format.

chilternPC:

............what is the implication of having, or value of dvd/mpg format?

by: chilternPCPosted on 2009-07-24 at 08:16:24ID: 24935769

the DVD format is to play on DVD players that plug in those old fashion trhings called tellys :-)
if you want to burn DVDs to play on tellys then you need to be able to convert to that format.
if you just want to play flash, mp4, mpg or DivX on a PC then just copy them to a DVD as data files and play on the PC. (some newer DVD players also play DivX and MPG files but not flash (yet)

looks like he needs something like
http://www.brothersoft.com/flash-flv-to-video-audio-converter-58949.html

Only thing i did ever personally is to extract a sound out of flash file into mp3 to use as a ring tone on the phone.
the above link was produced after about 2 mins of googling. i am sure there are more and probably better software out there for you to use.

I'll try to give you answers to the remaining questions, but i dont play with audio/video much (anymore)

1. it appears that the volumes were downloaded based on the same volumes that were playing on the website videos.

Some software can "normalize" the sound. Even Nero, albeit later versions are POSSIBLy on that list. I know that iTunes allows you individually ajust the volume on the files to be played louder/quiter. Winamp does it too. I KNOW i saw similar functionality in either Roxio or Nero, but cant confirm that.

3. How close to the actual website video quality has Real Player downloaded these videos and how close to the actual Real Player quality will Nero burn them? And can I expect that same quality when playing on external devices?

I think with RP what you see is what you get. Which format are the files in? for .avi files you can right click the file and in properties you will have the resolution. What you are looking for is 640x480 at least, for image not to be pixilated. All .avi and .mpg files that i keep for myself are wide screen i think 720x480. Those files i can watch on TV and enjoy. Nero probably can stretch them for you, but the quality isnt going to improve.

Depending on your devices, the formats you may need may vary. Almost any as you call them "table top" dvd and cd player understand computer file formats. By that i mean if you load up a cd full of mp3 files, it will play. same deal is if you have .avi or .mpg file burnt onto the disk without de-coding, simply as a data file. you can load up that disk into the DVD player and it wiil play. For older and/or dumber devices you have to decode. Nero doesnt sell that codec in basic editions (i think). if you have it, you still need the original file to be either .avi or .mpg(.mpeg). then the program will decode it and make into the real DVD or video disk.

Bottom line. if i were in your shoes, i'd invest about $50 or so into the new DVD player that can play DIVx files. then i wouldnt have to deal with crap like encoding/decoding etc. just burn the files onto the disk as data, pop it in and watch/listen

Here is http://www.techtastic.ca/reviews3/dvp642.html the player i've had at home for probably 5 years. playes all kind of disks i throw at him. with a little help from internet i even unlocked it and made it zone-free.

(I think it's time since my table top DVD recorder from 2006 is still in the box and obsolete probably by now - I'll use that for VHS transfer)<< these will be burnt as DVD so it's resolved there/

I want to get a audio and video disc from my Real Player library, << could be a problem because of the DRM of REAL Networks.
For extracting Audio to make an Audio disc only
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FLV_Extract
Audacity record it export as mp3.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Audacity
In Nero burn as either an audio disc ( CDA) playable on anything, or a data disc mp3. not playable on all cd players.
(3)
Real Player downloaded these videos as Flash Video files.<< All DVD require mpeg2 format. Using 720X576 video scale.
Convert them to mpeg2 using Super Video converter.
Download from author site (27.4MB)
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER
Then play them in VLC to test the quality.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VLC_media_player
reduce the video scale to smaller until you happy with the output.
You may need to install some codecs
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffdshow
(4)
Will Nero adjust the volumes for me or will I need to do it manually when using the burning software?<< No,  Becuase the audio is imbedded in the video that's difficult to achieve.
Nero has the Wave editor but is good for audio only. So if you have extracted teh audio out of flash then YES!!
what you want here is to normalise the audio
You can use Audacity to normalise the audio
Or Nero wave editor. I prefer Audacity
http://www.guidesandtutorials.com/audacity-tutorial.html
http://www.jtoolkit.com/audio/EditingAudioPart2.pdf
(6)
How close to the actual website video quality has Real Player downloaded these videos and how close to the actual Real Player quality will Nero burn them?<<<The quality will not be quite the same since you are using flash to mpeg, and the flash video scale is alot smaller than the DVD standards, try another video scale when you convert them to mpeg 2 with a video scale of 320X240.
(7)
How do I know the resolution of the videos on the website,
the resolution Real Player downloaded with (or to) << drop the flash onto gspot to determin the video scales used.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/GSpot
(8)
and what about Nero? Will the final product, after transfer, be the same resolution as the original videos from the website?<< no
but it will be ok , just  test the video scale when converting them to mpeg.
(9)
Will Nero change the Flash files to some other type of file automatically? to what? why? << no becuause it does not support flash.
use Super video converter
(10)
Or do I do that myself some how and what type files do I need to hopefully play on a table top DVD or CD player, car player, portable player or computer? <<
Once you have converted all the clips to mpeg2 use Nero then Nero Vision> Make a movie,
If the combined clips are not very big, you may not have burn a DVD but rather a VCD,
( DVD holds 4.7 gig) SVCD holds 700 megs)
I have Nero 7 as well and uses Nero Vision 4
Here's a visual guide to creating a DVD using Nero Vision 4
