AVI files won't play. Have been searching this site all day yesterday following instructions from posts similar to my problem but to no avail.
AVI's won't play in Windows Media Player so I downloaded the latest version and still won't play. Error reads "windows media player cannot play the file. the player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file"
Downloaded RealPlayer, error message "cannot render the file". Followed instructions from this post

I tried downloading VLC. That gives me no error, the little progress bar that moves as a movie/song plays just moves across the bar in about 5 seconds. No sound, no image. It doesn't even show length of file. eg 12:03.
Downloaded RealMediasplitter, have no idea what to do with it. Downloaded klcodec, still no idea.
Please help :( It's not just the one file that won't play, I have tried with several. They all came from different sources.
Forgot to add, I downloaded DivX, error "this file does not appear to contain a video track"
