help me get ieee 1394 host controller to work

I have been trying to connect my canon zr850 camcorder to on my computer. I have a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable. The firewire ports are onboard and the camcorder is not detected.
Looking at the Device Manager the IEEE 1394 Host controller does not exist. So, it's as if the firewire does not exist. I have searched and detected that the drivers exist on the computer, but cannot find out how to manually install the hardware. Is that even possible?

Computer: EVGA 680i motherboad
OS: Windows Vista Premium
