Question

Cannot format SD cards in Windows XP

Asked by: brihaspati79

I have 2 SD cards (1GB and a 2GB) which I use between two digital cameras, a Canon and a Fuji.  No problem there.  When I transfer pictures to my XP box, I re-insert the card and re-format in the camera.  No problem there.  The problem is, that when I try to format the card from the card reader in Windows Explorer, it says I cannot format, the disk is write protected.  So I look for the little switch on the card and make sure W/P is turned off, still no luck.  I try the switch in both, directions, ditto.  The only reason I want to do this is a need one of the cards for a LCD picture frame I got for Christmas.  Just so you know, I formated the card in a camera, put it back in the reader so I could drop pictures on it, and it said I could not do that because of the write protection.  The 2 GB card is a Kingston, the 1GB is a Promaster, and the USB 2.0 card reader is a Lexar.   Help please.

Why do you want to format the cards everytime? that is NOT needed at all, just delete the pictures from the SD cards

By default if XP detects a stoarge card with a capacity of 32MB or greater it will attempt to format it as NTFS which is not compatible with your camera (Canons and Nikon cameras use FAT16 or FAT12)  This means the card formatted in your camera is detected by Windows and can be read but when you attempt to use Windows to format it it presents an unrecognised format and Winodws assumes it is write protected.

As already mentioned you shouldn't routinely need to format your card (although many users do this as an alternative to deleting all there files after transferring them) but you should always use your camera to format the card, NOT Windows.

It could also be bad reader see if you can test with another reader.

So how could I make this card compatible with my picture frame?  I can't add pictures to it in Windows.  The frame has no internal memory of it's own.  I did try moving the the card reader to another XP machine, same thing.  Also, I tried to use it on a Vista machine, same thing.  I really do not want to buy a  32 MB card for it, the higher capacity would be best.

I will find another card reader to see if mine is messed up.

You need to check the manual for the frame, some have upper limits on the size of memory card you can use.  Personally I'd be suprised if it will use NTFS as the format of the card but if it does you will probably have to unload the card formatted as "Camera" onto your PC and copy the images to a card formatted as "Frame" in order that they can be dispalyed.  This would be so clumsy a way of dealing with the issue that I'm sure you will find the camera card shouls be imported directly into the frame (subject to the frame's own firmware limits)

There are no limit specifications for the frame (Nextar N7-102).  The frame is compatible with  SD, MMC, Smart Media Card Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro.  Jpeg file format is the only image format that can be used.  They expect you to load the card with images and plug it in.  I am assuming the file system is FAT, which FAT I do not know.  I want to use my 1GB SD card for permanent use in the frame.  It is already FAT.  But I cannot copy images to the card on a PC because the PC says the card is write protected.  So maybe I can plug my camera into the USB port on the PC and load images to the memory card that way?

Just out of curiosity, I tried this with a mac running OSX (copying pictures to the card).  The mac said the operation was not possible because the card could not be modified.

seems you only can put pics on it from the camera; maybe a soft protection on it; contact the manufacturer with your problem

I tried another card reader and it worked fine.
