Hi,
The Windows Movie Maker application is not compatible with the .M2TS file format.
The .M2TS file format is a High-definition video file format.
You can use the Sony Vegas Software to convert the .M2TS to the MPEG2/ MPEG1.
You can download the trial version of the Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Software to perform the above function.

That Canon shoots and outputs file in AVCHD format. There are a number of available encoders and editors for it, though there is a lack of easy to use free ones.

FFDShow is an all-around decoder that can be used in some host applications to convert it.
Nero will process it.
Splash will also play it, and the pay versions will enable exporting to standard formats. It is available here:
