We have a Windows XP system that otherwise seems to work just fine.
Recently, when we plug in two different digital cameras via USB to transfer images to computer, the only thing that happens is that we hear Windows make a sound, which is acknowlledging the connection, BUT nothing else happens, such as a screen opening (which used to) with several options for how to transfer the pictures. I did notice that a new icon shows in My Computer for a new Removable Device, which represents the contents of the camera's memory card, so we can get to the images this way, but have to manually transfer them to the computer. Does anybody know why the system does not respond anymore with a window opening with possible options, such as the Microsoft Camera and Scanner Wizard???

You need to install the softare native to those cameras for the "wizard" of that to open. otherwise it should open afolder on your desktop asking you what you want to open with?
if not go to My Computer under the devices with removable storage
r/click the DVD rom drive then properties Autoplay
put a tick a in the Prompt ME box for everything.

Possibly there's a software update available from the manufacturer's website which would fix it.
It might help to know which camera you have. The same software install and update works for my Canon SD550, A640, A650 IS, and SX10 IS, though the wizard that opens for the SX10 looks much different than for the others.
I'm talking about software you installed yourself, by the way; I think Merete and burrcm may be referring to the built in Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard.
Some cameras offer two connection modes, one which requires the camera specific software to be installed, the other which will present the camera to the PC as a removeble usb drive. It appears that yours is operating as a usb drive, as you can see the picture folder, so you should be able to set it to prompt you in the autoplay settings. One thing though if you have installed Real Player Message Centre, remove it as this will stop it cold.

Right click that icon, select properties, select autoplay, tick select an action to perform. The wizard should be one of the choices.
