USB message about using 2.0

Whenever I connect a USB device to my computer, I get a message saying "this device can go faster if you plug it into a USB 2 port". I have tried all ports on both front and back of box and several different cables. Makes no difference. My machine theoretically should have some 2.0 ports, as I bought it new in 2006.
