It seems that because the OS is created with device specific setings from your vendor that you would have to go through your vendor  (cingular, att etc..) if they have an update.

No no i am not using a Service provider specific Os. I brought the retail version of Nokia 6680. Not bundled with any Service provider.

i am free to use any sim card i wanted coz i brought it retail. i think u have misunderstand my question. my question is about upgrading OS. i am free to do whatever i can with my phone.

by: Mikal613Posted on 2007-10-28 at 06:31:56ID: 20164557

device specific setings  means also from Nokia. If there are no available updates then it probably wont work. They would need to bundle the phone drivers with the OS upgrade.

Yeah the thing i am asking abt is my local cellphone shops can overwrite the firmware with any versions of symbian Os like installing symbian os designed for nokia 6681 on 6680. They clear the entire memory and thats what i wanted to do like playing with the firmware.

i wanted to install the latest version..

by: Mikal613Posted on 2007-10-28 at 09:22:51ID: 20165472

you would ask nokia if they have it available for download

by: smartjen4uPosted on 2007-10-28 at 09:28:00ID: 20165488

Nokia is no longer developing any updates to this device

by: Mikal613Posted on 2007-10-28 at 10:38:42ID: 20165693

Then i dont think you will get the update.

by: smartjen4uPosted on 2007-10-29 at 01:06:33ID: 20168057

i already mentioned it that there is no update. please read my question carefully ! but you have not come to point or not answering my question at all !

by: upul007Posted on 2007-12-22 at 10:11:42ID: 20519240

well well well

Yours is a trickey question......

Nokia breaks their software updates according to the Product Code. This PC is used to differentiate according to regions.

Also I seriously doubt that a S60 3rd edition software is available for the Nokia 6680. Unless someone made it separately......

See the Nokia product codes at: http://allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56429

If you need to know how you can trick the Nokia Software Updater to update ur software, refer - http://www.techenclave.com/forums/how-upgrade-n73-n70-respective-music-84871.html

Taking the instructions above, I just updated my Nokia 6630 to a newer version. If you do find a Nokia 6680 3rd Edition product code on the web, you could do the same.

Note that this process is reversible.

I also agree with Mikal613 on the fact that you will not find a 3rd edition upgrade at this time. Searched for one for well over an hour......learned a lot too.

Good luck

Mr Upul007

i don't whether this trick will work or not but hoepfully in my search and a research you are the only one who came up with a positive and satisfying result. i surely should thank you for showing me such a new way.

i am going to try it now and never mind if it will work or not but nothing gonna cost for trying it. anyway thank you for your awesome reply... i hope you assist me more in the matter.

Hiya smartjen4u,

Well that trick refers to the N73 and N70. However it worked for me and now I have a Nokia 6680 Music Edition. So far I have given the newly upgraded software a very hard drilling and not even one complaint yet.

I am not certain how you will fare with the 6680. Hopefully it will work out great. I am very glad if it does.

You are most welcome. I will be around and if theirs any query, just post on this question and I will do my best to reply you.

Glad to have met a fellow gadget freak who is practically a neighbor. I am from Sri Lanka by the way......

Must admit that your question was an eye opener for me as well.

Dear upul ,
thanks for it. by the way can u send me the product code for 6680 music edition. i would be happy to upgrade my phone to music edition...

by: upul007Posted on 2007-12-23 at 06:39:17ID: 20521394

hi Sankar,

I meant to type the Nokia 6630 Music Edition above. Made a typo there. Sorry about that!

I checked at http://www.symbianos.pl/Artyku%B3y/Rozne/Product_Code_telefon%F3w_BB5/ but could not find the product code for the Nokia 6680 Music Edition.

The latest product code for the Nokia 6680 can be found on that link.

First of all, it's not Symbian OS 3rd Edition.
Symbian version is 9.x. It's S60 that's 3rd Edition.
Symbian is the OS, S60 is the UI. They're two independent things.

With that said, the version of the UI or the OS will never be updated by a firmware update.
It has never happened an never will. Sorry.

by: genxstanPosted on 2010-01-28 at 05:49:41ID: 26427363

I don't think this works for Nokia 6680 because the hardware supporting S60 V3 is not available in N6680.
