There are number of ways of getting MSN working on the iPhone.. Which way are you using...?

by: RamantePosted on 2009-03-18 at 12:22:49ID: 23922562

i'm new to iphone.  Im using the icon IM.  When selecting, I createe (Add) MSN.  Then enter User name & password and thats it.  Afterward,  I select ON then Log In.   Thats when I get the error.

Please advice on the proper way to setup messenger on the iphone

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-03-18 at 12:28:19ID: 23922627

At the moment there is no way to run MSN natively.. IE as its own application..

There are a number (free) applications that act as a proxy for you to connect to MSN - IM is one of them...

I personally like FRING (also avaliable in appstore for free), what I like about this is that you can also use Skype with it...

With reagrds to why it doesnt work.. I am unsure as I have never used.. If you dont want to swap then I can download it and try but that said..

You can use the webbased version at http://mobile.msn.com  then click on the MSN Messenger icon at the bottom.. You should then be able to login... This is then not acting as a proxy and therefore if you only want access to MSN then I would recommend this way...

Where do I download FRING?

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-03-19 at 05:23:42ID: 23928635

The appstore..

Where is AppStore in my iphone?

by: RamantePosted on 2009-03-19 at 18:47:38ID: 23936337

Ok....found install and process it...but it says "Error  Package Download Failure"

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-03-20 at 13:46:29ID: 23943760

Err thats funny.

If you hold the power button and the home button until the phone restarts and then try again.. What happens..?

If still no good then take a backup with iTunes then do a restore then try downloading it again..

by: RamantePosted on 2009-03-27 at 15:05:42ID: 24005896

Same result...do I have to Jailbreak it?

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-03-28 at 05:56:58ID: 24008267

No definetly no need to jailbreak it...

I think you should do a restore..  Make sure that you backup of the phone!

Then try downloading FRING again..

by: RamantePosted on 2009-03-28 at 06:35:59ID: 24008442

u mean restore from iTunes apps?

Would I loose my carrier T-Mobile configuration?

by: HaloShgPosted on 2009-03-28 at 06:46:27ID: 24008480

I would recommend Palringo, for your MSN business. The main purpose of FRING was to be the first free app with SIP support (hence the name FRING, Free Ring). It isn't very capable with it's MSN implement.

If you are having trouble downloading apps, try some or all of the following:

- Download it via iTunes on your computer and perform a sync
- Download it via WiFi (In you settings disable EDGE and 3G)
- Download it via 3G (in your setting, disable EDGE and WiFi)

Before you perform a restore, try the following:
- Restart it (Hold power for 5 seconds and slide off, then turn it back on by pressing power)
- Plug it into iTunes and perform a sync

You will not lose your T-Mobile configuration as long as you back up your data before restoring. You may, however, have to restore some settings in certain apps, depending on whether or not they were backed up.

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-03-30 at 11:58:23ID: 24022042

You shouldn't loose any carrier configs.. You phone should be just fine..!

by: RamantePosted on 2009-03-31 at 01:58:14ID: 24026887

In conclusion, if I do a backup thru iTunes, then jailbreak it and if anything happens or misconfiguration problems that'll make my phone useless, I just connect to my iTunes and restores and I will have my iphone as it was prior any changes?

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-04-05 at 05:47:17ID: 24071301

You don't need to jailbreak the iPhone FRING and a nunber of other apps are avaliable on Appstore.

Making a backu of your phone and then restoring it will return the phone to the same state (or at least the same data - with new OS portion) as it was before...

by: RamantePosted on 2009-04-05 at 17:22:38ID: 24073631

Ok...I restore my iphone and went and reinstall Fring:

- Went to the Sources screen
- Tap Edit and on next screen tap Add
- In the Add Source http://fring.com.iphone.xml saw the progress bar Refreshing Sources
- Loaded the Categories screen loads, scroll down list and tap fring and click on it
- Tap Install and still get the error:

    "error package download failed!"

How do I disable EDGE? (maybe that has somethi8ng to do)?

What else can I do)

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-04-06 at 04:48:12ID: 24076246

I think you are getting yourself confused between the appstore and Cydia.

You need to download it in the AppStore not Cydia..

Can you restore the iPhone again and see if it is there..

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-04-08 at 07:59:23ID: 24097981

How about you take a screen shot of your iPhones "desktops" (or each of them if you have more than one).

Do this by holding the home button and the pressing the power button once.. You can then email it / them and we can see if it is actually there...

by: RamantePosted on 2009-04-09 at 01:43:04ID: 24105252

How do I make a screen shot of my iPhone?

I tried the by holding the home button and the pressing the power button once, but it only returns me to my security code initial screen (I tried this with & without connected to my PC "Windows XP-Pro)

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-04-09 at 13:21:21ID: 24111114

Ok, Lets do this the other way round...!

Here is a nice picture of Steve Jobbs and the iPhone with the appstore icon clearly shown..!

modem firmware 04.04.05_G

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-04-11 at 05:41:18ID: 24121841

Well there is your answer..!

Appstore is only avaliable on OS 2..

You need to plug the phone into iTunes and choose "Update" to get the firmware to the latest..

by: RamantePosted on 2009-04-11 at 07:34:00ID: 24122148

if I update the firmware...will it affect my carrier info; making my phone useless (this iphone was purchase in central america and now i am using it here in the US with T-Mobile...i wouldn't like to mess up that configuration)

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-04-13 at 03:09:39ID: 24128746

Well,

We you have two options:

  • You stick with your current firmware and no Appstore + a lot of other features.
  • You change to At&t and activate it through iTunes

by: RamantePosted on 2009-04-13 at 04:05:24ID: 24128873

I assume by your answer that if I update the firmware, it will affect my cell carrier info; making my phone useless.

Is that correct?

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-04-13 at 05:42:52ID: 24129337

If you dont have a valid contract then YES.

by: RamantePosted on 2009-04-13 at 05:50:20ID: 24129377

Any way unlocking or jailbreaking would help?

by: JohnGerhardtPosted on 2009-04-13 at 06:15:10ID: 24129533

I am sorry I am not going to give you any information regarding jailbreaking your iPhone it is against EE rules.
