I had success with the following settings on a 2820n with a Vodafone USB E272.

If *99 doesn't work as the number to dial, try *98 - those are the only 2 combinations I've seen used on GSM/UMTS/HSDPA systems.

All the CDMA/1xRTT/EV-DO systems I've seen use #777 instead.

Have you tried leaving the username and password blank, btw?
