The solution is as follows:
Download and install Samsung PC Studio version 3 +.
Run the updater.
This will install the drivers and ports that are needed to connect.
It will NOT, however, connect to the phone, (due probably, to an arrangement with the service providers).
Download BitPim.
With phone pluged in to the USB port and switched on, it might auto detect, but, will probably need to be configured through the wizard.
Choose phone type SPH-M300MEDIA
Once phone is recognized, select menu item Data->Get Data, and it will.
You can then un-install Samsung PC Studio.
