Question

help: Nokia n95 menu problem

Asked by: Frost_Byte

I have a Nokia n95 (regular, not the 8gb version) for a while now, and it's been working fine.

Today, for no apparent reason, its main menu stopped working.

Specifically, when I try to access it, I get an error message saying " menu: unsupported property" (I'm translating it from the local language) and I get sent back to the main screen.

I haven't installed anything new on it, nor have I been having any problems with it.

Any idea how to fix this? (of course I tried resetting to manufacturer's settings)

Thanks!

Are you sure there wasn't anything new downloaded or installed onto it?  Also could you provided the untranslated error message?  Most likely you may just have to bring it into a local store and have the tech's there take a look at it.  If it's a manufacturer's problem which it sounds like it would be since you stated nothing on it has changed, they should swap it for free if you are covered.  Checking with them wouldn't hurt. Otherwise provide us with the untranslated error.

Dear DigitalTechy,

Although I can indeed take the phone to service, they will most likely keep it for a week or more before giving it back (and possibly telling me they can't solve it themselves). I've had bad experience with them before, and am reluctant to go through it again.

Since I feel comfortable with SW\HW, I was hoping that this is something I can solve myself somehow.

No, nothing was downloaded or installed on it before this happened (nothing installed for a while now)

The message in English, once I switch to English interface, is:
"Menu: Feature not supported"
This comes after a short pause. Afterwords I get bumped back to the default screen.

According to google, quite a lot of people have run into the same problem, but the option of a "hard reboot" (and deletion of all my apps and data) is something I'd like to try and avoid at all cost.

any ideas?

Interesting, sure we can try a couple things if you don't want to perform a hard reset.  Can provide the firmware you are running, updating that if it's not the latest version quite possibly will fix that error if it's not the latest.

It really seems due to a program that either gets corrrupt or errors out.  Sadly you could try uninstalling programs 1 by 1 to see if it resolves itself otherwise if that firmware update doesn't work you'll probably have to just end up doing a hard reset to resolve the error message, since that will work but like you said you will lose your apps.

Can you please point me to information on how to update the firmware and where I can get the latest version?

Also, how can I tell what version I now have (remember, I don't have access to my main menu)?

Thanks

To find out if new software is available for your particular device model, you need to know your device product number.

   1. Turn the Nokia device off
   2. Remove the battery from your Nokia device to read the 7-digit product code located on the white label.
   3. Check if new software is available for your device at Nokias website.

You should be able do do everything from the first link.

ok, I'll look at these things and try to make some sense out of them. It will therefore probably take me a week or two to get back here and award the points.

Thanks for trying to help.

Installing the new firmware seems to have done the trick.

It also completely deleted everything on my phone. Lucky I had a backup ready, but even so, this was a lot of work.

Anyway, thanks!
