Windows XP does not Recognize DVD

I have a Sony DVD RW DW-U14A and it will recognize CD's but not DVD's

Had issue before with certain disk types.

I'd suspect that if its a pressed DVD, and works on other drivers, the laser might be out of alignment, or even too weak to read the data.

What is a pressed DVD?  I have tried several dvd disks.  I also googled windows xp not recognizing dvd-rw and it took me to a knowledge base.  I actually had them send me the hotfix, but I do not know how to install it.  I have attached the file they sent to me.  ONe of them told me I already had the latest update.

the commercial dvd's or cd's are pressed, or printed, while the user burns them.
Try each type
you can also try : http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm      
but you may have a ba dvd drive - replace it

I have tried each type.  I have also tried the cd dvd fix.htm you talk about.  It did not work.

does it read and write cd's, and DVD's?
you can try booting from a dvd and cd to test it

If you can access CD's through the drive, but not DVD's, it sounds like a bad laser.  DVD's require very accurate lasers, your's may just be bad from the factory.  I have had this happen at work before.  My drive eventually stopped reading CD's.

It will read and burn cd's but it will not read or burn dvd's  It tells me the drive is not ready.  When I am in windows explorer, it does not show any files when a dvd is inserted.  When a cd is inserted it shows the contents of the disk.

then it is time you buy a new drive - it is bad

I've had it where certain colored disks are not recognized by the drive because the disk detecting LED did not activate when that particular colored ROM was inserted.
The fault appears to be that windows does not recognize anything as you have stated.
Try a pressed silver DVD ROM and feedback please..

I have not tried booting from a dvd.  I will try this.  It sounds like I may be buying  a new drive.
