Question

LG Blu-Ray hangs Vista/PowerDVD when trying to play movie

Asked by: Premiumpcs

I am working on a HTPC project with Bluray player. I built this system originally with XP Media Center and have everything working fine.
I then made it a dual boot with Vista Premium and got everything working properly with the latest driver updates minus hooking up the Blu-ray drive.  I then loaded the Cyberlink BD/HD Advisor and everything passed the test indicating it was ready for the Blu-ray drive. I shut the system down, plugged the Blu-ray drive in where the combo drive was previousely plugged in and fired it back up. At this point sometimes it hangs on starting up, sometimes it will boot all the way into Windows and passes the BD/HD advisor test. The Cyberlink Power DVD program freezes when I load the Blu-ray movie or regular DVD movie in and press the start arrow on Power DVD player that came with the drive. Also the hard drive light stays on solid indefinitely and Vista says the program is not responding, (what's new). After further research I went to nVidia's web site and downloaded a scan tool that said I needed to install older mother board drivers than the one it shipped with, so I did, then lastly I installed SP1 with no effect. If I unplug the Blu-ray drive and then plug the DVD combo drive in, it is happy. I am running out of ideas short of trying another Blu-ray brand... Any thoughts?

Hi Premiumpcs, I have no experience on this  problem so my powers of deduction woudl state taht yoru problems lies in how you set everything up to use the
blue ray drive but with out the blue ray drive present.
note your comment>> plugged the Blu-ray drive in where the combo drive was previousely plugged in and fired it back up

and then>>then plug the DVD combo drive in, it is happy.

Windows is very particular about the rom drive you used to install the OS.
that is one idea. if youchange the rom drive may effect the a lot fo things and blue ray is not a standard acceptable rom drive to use toinstall windowsxp.
Ask the system file checker for example to use a blueray disc :)

so my powers of deduction suggest  first you check the bios boot order is set to  boot from  hard drive not rom drive ok.

Device manager is showing the proper driver for the Blu-ray drive is loaded. Also, the diagnostic program that came with the drive determined that the drive is installed properly. So that doesn't appear to be the problem.

You are really in the front line using this blue ray, the support for it in Vista as yet is not fully under way

MS is saying there won't be support for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray just yet.
He will leave that to 3rd party software such as Cyberlink.

As I previousely stated, I installed XP media center first then I installed Vista for a dual boot PC.
Sounds like for right now the only solution is for me to contact Cyberlink for a possible answer...?
I will contact Cyberlink next but I am going to leave this question open for a few days to see if anyone else has an answer or another third party player for me to try.

Premiumpcs.
I have the exact same issue with the same drive. Except all Blu-ray software crashes that I have tried. I have contacted Cyberlink, and have received a basic troubleshooting answer, to which I will follow up with them. However, sice all the software, like Windvd 9, freezes. I am left to believe it is something hardware related or an incompatability issue. So far in my googleing, your post is the only one alike my issue. If you find a solution, please post it here, and I shall do likewise. Currently I am thinking about buying another blu ray drive, just to eliminate the chance it is the drive itself.

It may be that we will have to wait for Microsoft to fix it as Merete above stated they are working on it.
Also, did you try the Cyberlink powerdvd 8 ULTRA? It says on their homepage that is the only one that supports Blu-ray in Vista.

Hi guys,
Just occured to me,
does your system meet all the necessary software?
DVD roms come bundled with Power DVD or Win DVD and Nero or Roxio
Did your power dvd come bundled with this blueray rom?
Or the other rom drive?
Then the thought struck me can OEM version work okay?

Since there is still debates ongoing to the  rights of Blueray with different brands of DVD roms.
Extract
Playback software. Windows doesnt include its own native software for playing back either Blu-ray or HD DVD media.
For that, youll need a third-party program.
See it states LG..
The LG drives arrived with an OEM version of CyberLinks Power DVD Ultra, which works on Vista and on Windows XP SP2.
Blu-ray, HD DVD, and Vista

Microsoft is only providing support through thirdparty utilities that will play or recognize blue ray disc in Windows Vista, no built in support at all. You can read the correction here:

The OEM software kept locking up as soon as the play button was hit. So I now have the PowerDvd 8 ultra, and the same with it. Same with and WinDVD. My hardware should meet the requirements: Samsung SyncMaster 206BW, Ati Sapphire Toxic 3870 512mb, Amd 64 2 5000, 4 gigs of Gskill ram, the DFI LanParty DK 790FX, 660 gigs of hard drive space. All graphic drivers are up to date, same with Vista. So far, I have not upgraded my BIOS as of yet. I have not received another email as of today from Cyberlink either. Thanks for the fast responses, Premiumpcs & Merete.

aphelion777 coudl you take alook at what events are listed these canhelp pin down any problems.
The System Health Report helps track down any errors that may occur within your software or hardware and generates a report that tells you exactly what the problems are. When the report is generated, you will see a list of: the status of any critical components on the computer, whether or not the problem has been detected, and any possible solutions you can try.

I ended up buying a new Sony brand Bluray player and it worked without any problems in Vista. The first drive from LG would only work properly in XP. There is some incompatibility in certain hardware configurations and this is a solution that worked for me.

by: PremiumpcsPosted on 2008-08-14 at 07:02:29ID: 31463428

Your answer was as close to the solution that worked for me as I could find in all the people who helped with this question. The bottom line is that XP worked and Vista would not with the LG drive I originally started with. I ended up buying a Sony drive that worked first try in Vista.  As you stated and I also thought originally, there is some incompatibility in some hardware configurations that does not show up in the Cyberlink test program. This is the best I can do right now until Microsoft does support it natively.

glad it solved too.

Make sure you're using the correct/specific driver for your SATA controller, as the standard Windows driver caused an issue similar to this for me, where it would hang for an hour, then play the movie like normal.

If it's an Intel system, get the Intel Matrix Storage Manager version for your chipset. Don't bother trying any versions later than 7.0. If it doesn't like that you're trying to install it on Vista, you can extract the driver from the installer (iaahci.inf) and install it manually from the Device Manager.
