My brother's HP Media Center m7160n recently lost its HD. I refit it with a new one, with a fresh install of Windows XP.
I installed drivers from
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=ca&dlc=en&product=470506&lang=enand I discovered that the HL-DT-ST DVDRRW 4166b drive does not recognize DVDs at all (don't know that it ever did with the new HD). When looking at My Computer, the drive lists nothing in its contents. Under Properties, it is listed only as type: CD drive, with 0 used space and 0 free space. This happens with genuine movie DVDs, blank DVD +Rs, DVDs with data burned on them.
The drive WILL recognize CDs though. Data and audio ones work fine.
Is the DVD drive dead? Or is this something else?
