Question

Unidentified conflict causing intermittent communication error with the LightScribe drive.

Asked by: BigBexar

Im requesting assistance in identifying the source(s) of a conflict in my computer configuration that is causing transient errors when attempting to burn a DVD label using LightScribe.  (I use the term transient errors due to the fact that I have been able to burn labels on a couple of occasions, but 95% of the time the process fails.  Typically the failure is occurring after the burning process has been in progress for 5-10 minutes, thus leaving a partial image on the disk.)

After much effort and exasperation, Im convinced that the solution lies in making some relatively minor system tweak I just dont have the knowledge to understand the nuances of the System Registry, I/O Conflicts, etc. needed to recognize the conflict and correct it.  Having exhausted my own problem solving abilities with regard to computers, Im hoping that someone in Experts Exchange can direct me to an effective solution.

I want to apologize in advance for the length of this posting, but I thought it might save everyone a lot of time if we could forego repeating much of the troubleshooting actions Ive already completed.

Here is the error message that appears when Im using Nero 7 Essentials (the software that came with the Samsung SH-S203N SCSI CDDVDW drive with the LightScribe functionality):

Im most anxious to get this issue resolved, and I welcome your expert responses!  J

Nero-LightScribe
Print process failed.
A communication error has occurred with the LightScribe drive.

I have spent MANY HOURS trying to find a solution on the internet, and have learned the following:
"      This communication error problem has been around for YEARS, and there are many people who have experienced it.  (Many of the forum discussion links that came up through a Google search of the error message dated back to 2004 and 2005.)
"      I have attempted most of the well-intentioned try this& suggestions that I found during this research, and NONE of these possible solutions has made any impact on the problem.  My troubleshooting efforts to date have included:
1.      Uninstalling and reinstalling all of the various software components (list of software to follow), including having only ONE copy of the CD/DVD labeling software on the computer at a time (to avoid potential conflicts);
2.      Checking the Registry, cleaning the registry with various third party Registry Cleaners, including Neros Cleaning Utility file;
3.      Checking and adjusting the jumper settings on my optical drives; disabling the two non-LightScribe optical drives to evaluate potential conflicts;
4.      Checking and tweaking the settings under Administrative Tools\Services\LightScribeServices Direct Disk Labeling Services;
5.      Trying different versions of the LightScribe System Software, as well as different versions of the Nero software (both versions 7 & 8), in addition to trying SureThing CD Labeler 4 SE;
6.      Returning my initial LightScribe optical drive and purchasing another brand of drive;

The final result has remained unchanged, i.e. regardless of the hardware, software or drivers being used, the typical sequence is:
1.      The labeling burn process begins, and continues for several minutes;
2.      The burn process ultimately FAILS, which generates an error message regarding the COMMUNICATION ERROR with the LightScribe drive;
3.      The LightScribe drive light remains flashing, and the status of both the optical drive and the software is hanging, e.g. requiring a RESTART of windows to regain any response from the drive (even to get it to eject the disk);

The only deviation from this sequence is that on 3 or 4 occasions, the label process did complete successfully, and there is no indication of anything being different at the time the successful burns were accomplished.

Install most recent BIOS update for motherboard.  Install latest firmware for your burner.  Install a higher wattage power supply (preferably a brand name).  Turn off antivirus and screen saver and power saving during the burn.

by: BigBexarPosted on 2008-06-29 at 07:49:35ID: 21894234

Okay, I performed the BIOS update, and had already installed the latest firmware for the burner.  I have upgraded the power supply from a 340W to a 600W power supply (good call on that one!).  I had already tried turning off the anti-virus and screen saver during the burn, but had overlooked mentioning this in my previous post.

Anyway, after complying with all of the above parameters, I attempted another burn and got negative results, i.e. the burn still fails with the "communications error" message.  I suspect the solution lies within some subtle tweak of a registry or some other setting.  Any further suggestions?  Thanks in advance for your efforts in diagnosing this persistent problem!

by: JohnnyCanuckPosted on 2008-07-01 at 11:10:32ID: 21910114

Look in control panel->system->hardware->device manager->ide ata/atapi controllers.  Locate your SATA controller(s) and right click it and select properties (you likely have more than one listed).  Click on the channel tabs and tell us what the transfer mode says and what boxes are checked.  A hard drive will have all boxes checked while an optical drive will probably have only one box checked.

by: JohnnyCanuckPosted on 2008-07-01 at 11:27:35ID: 21910255

Oops, my computer has the SATA controllers listed under ide ata/atapi controllers - yours might be listed under SCSI and RAID Controllers.  The rest still applies.

by: BigBexarPosted on 2008-07-01 at 12:03:35ID: 21910537

I checked my SATA controller(s) as indicated - the SATA functionality on this desktop computer is provided via a PCI card - the device brand is:

Initiao inic 1620 S-ATA Adapter

In looking at the properties for this device (or any of the other devices, for that matter), there was no Channel tab available, and thus no check boxes for transfer mode, etc. - just the usual tabs: General, Driver, Details, and Resources.

The computer is running Windows XP Home Edition, SP3 - does this version of Windows have the Channel tab available?

by: JohnnyCanuckPosted on 2008-07-01 at 13:39:52ID: 21911422

Yes, you should see the channel tab with XP SP3.  Do you have the correct drivers for your PCI card?

http://www.initio.com/support/index-download.htm

This looks like an old card as it has been discontinued.  I suspect the card may be the culprit.

by: BigBexarPosted on 2008-07-01 at 20:31:47ID: 21913239

Thanks for the information on the website for the driver update.  I've downloaded and installed the updated driver - still didn't get the "Channel" tab when viewing the device properties.  I'm trying another LightScribe label burn at this time - we'll see if it completes successfully... I sure hope so!

by: BigBexarPosted on 2008-07-02 at 20:05:59ID: 21922390

Well, the first LightScribe burn that I performed after the driver update completed successfully - I was truly elated.  However, on two subsequent label burn attempts, each failed with the "communications error..."

I guess I'll just have to keep searching for other possible solutions...

by: JohnnyCanuckPosted on 2008-07-03 at 09:37:18ID: 21927087

Did anything change between the successful and the unsuccessful burn (windows updates, any other software updates)?  Do you have another (newer) SATA card you can try?

by: BigBexarPosted on 2008-07-03 at 14:12:55ID: 21929118

No, nothing changed - the three burn attempts were done back-to-back (the first burn was TEXT only, the second burn included a graphic with the text, and then when that failed, I went back to text only for the third burn).

During the first burn (successful), I even had the anti-virus and screen saver software running in the background, as I'd forgotten to turn them off.

I don't have another SATA option in relation to this machine - I may see if I can exchange the SATA LightScribe drive for an EIDE LightScribe drive.  I'm out-of-town for the holiday weekend right now, so I can't do anything further until after I return home.

Thanks for your persistence in trying to find a solution - I appreciate your efforts!

Update:
After returning from the holiday weekend,  I resumed efforts to resolve the problem.  Prior to returning the SATA LightScribe drive to MicroCenter, I decided to try installing it and the Initio inic 1620 S-ATA adapter in another desktop computer here in the house - the LightScribe function of the optical drive worked without any errors!  Of course, I was pleased, but still curious, so I went to MicroCenter and purchased an EIDE LightScribe drive, and installed it in the original desktop computer where I'd experienced so many problems.  Much to my chagrin (and delight), the EIDE LightScribe drive worked without any errors, and hasn't burned a "coaster" yet!

All I can say is, I wish I had tried THAT solution about 36 manhours ago!  Obviously there was a compatability issue with the one desktop computer (with the ASUS P4B266 motherboard) and the Initio inic 1620 S-ATA adapter.  Whatever, I'm just glad that the LightScribe function is now working consistently, so that I can get on with my life!

Thanks, JohnnyCanuck,  for all your interest, efforts and suggestions on my behalf.
