Oop, I am not sure Turkey where you are though.

Browse All TopicsHi Experts,
I have a 2.5' USB hard drive with 160 GB (Usually works on 1 USB port).
I would like to keep the movies I shoot on it.
Although my TV has a USB plug it only supports USB memory up to 16GB and no HDD.
So I am basically looking for a solution to connect the hard drive to for example a DVD player to be able to playback on the TV.
Another issue are the codecs. While most clips are mov I also have divx, mpeg. Would be great if several formats were supported.
I'd rather not keep a laptop or PC in the living room.
Please give me some options since not everything can be bought where I live (Turkey).
Thanks

The TV can read the USB stick if I understand you and play what is on it.
The TV is the master and the USB device is only the slave. If this is so a DVD drive won't play back through to the TV through the USB connection.
However if you have a video card with a VIVO port you can run a cable from your computer to the television. Most fairly recent models of television have either an S-connector or SCART connector. You can connect from the VIVO port to the television connector and watch your movies that way.
@dbrunton
The TV only supports up to 16GB flash memory and only mpg encoding.
The DVD player will be connected via any of: Scart, HDMI, ... and not USB.
The DVD player should itself have a USB plug such that the HDD can be hooked up to the player.
The DVD player usually knows different movie encodings so that part should be fine.
The bigger problem is does it support large external HDDs.
There is no information from vendors *(Philip or Samsung) will tell you that will work, but many people (and I am one of them :o) have been using long time ..... Before only Philip dvd player has usb port .... recently Samsung has it as well ..... Samsung is much better for upscale 1080P. And if you have either Philip or Samsung, get HDMI cable to connect dvd player to TV (if your TV is HDTV) .... you will get the most of best video though.
For the format FAT, if you have have large hard disk, then use free tool below to format, I used it to format my 750G drives ....

The 8 characters (because FAT format) is best to show up, however, if you name more than 8, they still show up but kinda messy ..... not in order, missing title, etc. but the movie is still working just fine.
Hi all, my 2 cents worth
DVD players with USB divx support are not that reliable.

I have bought a few and they seem to burn out in relative short time lock up and stop functioning.
Parts are not made to last these days.
There is actually a large range of ideas on this but it depends on your budget and the location of your TV.
A media center PC kind of resolves it in one go.
Using a USB external drive is also not a good flow rate with video live playback that I found anyway.
But try these ideas, put your external harddrive into an enclosure then it acts as a media player with more options

A laptop/desktop would probably be the best work around but not everyone's idea of a cable free house.
A PC supports all the video formats you want to play without having to format the drive to FAT
Video cards with TV out connect the two cables video and audio
composite cables rca or s-video out rca
to TV AVS1 or AVS2 in.
the same connection as a DVD player connects to the TV.
then play your media files from the external drive to the desktop media player such as VLC or MPC,
Enqueue the videos in the media player and they play full screen on the TV one after another
Quality is great as I use this myself.
here's a bit of info on that idea

Another work around is wireless senders from the PC to TV example
Wireless Audio Video AV Sender Transceiver Transmitter Receiver for TV,STB,DVD,

So now you have a few more ideas

I have used DVD players (Philip and Samsung) ones have usb port and supports Divx format. Just hook up the usb hard drive to it and play movies from it.
But remember, the drive should be in FAT format, and name of movie should not more than 8 characters.
