it may not be the itunes per say, have you tried the standard windows XP writer, Nero, Roxio or CDBurnerXP?
This should eliminate a hardware fault at least...

Browse All TopicsI am attempting to burn CDs with iTunes on my Sony VAIO PC with XP. I have had absolutely no trouble in the past doing so and have burned hundreds of CDs this way. But recently whenever I try to burn a CD it starts writing the first track then cancels and prompts with the error "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occured (4xxx)" The code has changed several times, I have gotten 4450, 4315, and 4280. I followed some instructions on a HP site to change a config file which did not work. I have also tried several different CD brands. It works 1 out of every 30 times or so. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Update the driver first, then test. However I am under the impression that drivers needed are the generic drivers from windows. You can check that with device manager--if the drivers are from OEM or microsoft.
Could this be some messed up DRM issues? How about burn a plain data file to a CD-R. Just copy paste, the right click select burn to disc.
