The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Laptop sees cd/dvd drive, can open the drive, but doesn't see any data

I'm hoping someone can help me.  Machine is running XP Pro w/SP3 and all updates.  Client machine is on network that is running Symantec Enterprise 10.  This is a HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop.  The combo drive...which is a Phillips something or other....has been working flawlessly until recently.  User claims that she was playing a CD, took it out and then inserted another CD.  Nothing happened.  When I went and looked at it, I can see  the drive listed in My Computer, I can click on the drive and it opens without any errors, but it doesn't display any data.  I have tried multiple CD's....original ones, and still no data will display.  I have even tried booting the system up to a WinXP original disk and it won't.  The BIOS sees the drive, I get it as an option to boot to, but nothing happens when I select it and press enter.  It just goes ahead and loads windows.  I have gone into Device manager and uninstalled the drive, then rebooted to have it reinstall, but still the same issue.  Can see drive, can open drive, but no data on disks.

Many of the posts I have read, suggested modifying the registry of the upper and lower filters.  I have not done this, as it appears their issues revolve primarily around no drive being detected in the first place.  My drive is listed, you just can't see any data.  I am hesitatnt to do the modifications to the registry if it won't potentially resolve this issue.  There are no error messages when I click on the drive, nor are there any errors showing in Device Manager that I can see.

This is most frustrating and any help would be greatly appreciated!
