There's shows on it's hard drive that I want to burn to DVDs. what do I need to get them into a PC and then convert it into a format that I can burn a DVD to watch on a normal DVD player connected to a TV (not just to play on the PC).
the back of the unit has connectors labeled: s-video out , SATA and 1394, along with the usual coax out, RCA jacks for audio and video out.

Most DVRs have a proprietary file format, so you can't copy the files and convert them (Tivo is the exception). This thread says you have to take the analog route to capture the video, using the s-video port: http://forum.videohelp.com /topic2494 10.html. If the original material was high definition, the quality will be severely downgraded going through an analog connection. There is also the distinct possibility that Scientific Atlanta disabled all output from these connectors.
