Browse All TopicsHi, I'm building a media PC using MythTV. I have a Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150 - TV tuner which is an analog receiver. I have the comcast digital tv package and I'm using a digital cable receiver. With this receiver I get both digital and analog channels.
What would be the best way to build my media PC? I'm guessing I'll need a digital TV tuner card, right? If so which model is compatible with MythTV? Or will my PRV-150 card just work with my digital cable box?

Or will my PRV-150 card just work with my digital cable box?
Yes, just connect the S-Video (or composite video) and audio inputs of the PVR-150 to the S-Video (or composite video) and audio outputs of the cable box (if it has them). If you want to use your computer to change channels on the cable box, you will also need a device to do that - an IR Blaster.
If you use the cable box in conjuction with the PVR-150, you will still be able to view or record all channels through the media center PC.
I'm guessing I'll need a digital TV tuner card, right?
If you get a digital tuner TV tuner card (and not use the cable box), you will only get the clear QAM digital channels and analog channels, not the scrambled QAM digital channels. A lot of Comcast's digital channels are scrambled QAM digital and your computer/digital tuner won't be able to tune to the scrambled QAM channels without the cable box.
So, in your scenario, to view or record scrambled QAM channels, the cable box is required.
