Thank you Water Street :-)

downingram,

Others at EE are more familiar with this issue than I,  but meanwhile I found a link that might answer your question.  Watch the visual presentation at the top of the linked page and note the comments below it.  That visual might answer your question.  It's slow, so be patient.

downingram,

If your TV does not have the inputs or the right ones then you'll need a converter box, or an adaptor, as examples are shown in the links below:

http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Presentation-Converter-Laptop-1L7/dp/B000X3FAJU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232397209&sr=1-2

Regardless of the connection to your TV, if it is not a HDTV then you probably want to set the display screen resolution to be no more than 800 by 600.

I'm not sure why you are taking the video output from your computer's VGA and then trying to convert it to RCA composite (or have misread your intention).

This is what you need (or any similar version)

http://www.svideo.com/7svto3rca.html

Plug into the s-video output on the RHS of your Inspiron then the yellow composite and red and white audio are self explanatory :)

by: downingramPosted on 2009-01-19 at 13:09:59ID: 23414550

WaterStreet,
I have brought this Item but only use the yellow cable. I was told I didnt need to use the other one.

http://www.amazon.com/NEW-CONVERTER-S-VIDEO-CABLE-ADAPTER/dp/B000S675JU/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232397630&sr=1-13

Regardless of the connection to your TV, if it is not a HDTV then you probably want to set the display screen resolution to be no more than 800 by 600.

It Is set at 800x600 But I still get no external display attached.

What I did was put this---
http://www.amazon.com/NEW-CONVERTER-S-VIDEO-CABLE-ADAPTER/dp/B000S675JU/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232397630&sr=1-13
Into my 15 pin port In my laptop and the plugged this-----
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VIDEO-LEAD-RCA-PHONO-TO-PHONO-PLUG-YELLOW-2M_W0QQitemZ120365042320QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item120365042320&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318
Into the yellow cable and then plugged the other side Into my yellow port on my tv.
I then plugged this-----
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-5mm-Jack-to-2-x-RCA-Phono-Audio-Cable-Gold-1m-Lead_W0QQitemZ390024617510QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_3?hash=item390024617510&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318
Into my head phone port on my laptop and then put the red and white end Into my tv next to the yellow port.

I hope this might help In getting me sorted.

Thanks WaterStreet.

Will this also work? I do not have a hdtv or a new plasma. It Is not new. Also the thing I have found does not have the extra cable you have on the other side of the red yellow and white one.

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-01-19 at 14:14:24ID: 23415118

Yes, my mistake - the 1525 is a 4-pin s-video output (see below)

The s-video doesn't carry audio hence the extra 3.5mm stereo jack at the laptop end (which feeds the red and white RCA plugs)

This would do it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260346362395

(still trying to reconcile your PST timezone and your posting of UK eBay links ;))

Thank you MaSqueraid.
Yes I am England and the time here Is 10 25 pm.
Would you say I should now buy the Item you posted?
A friend thought It would work the way I have tried but It does not.
I think you have sorted the solution.
So shell I buy the Item In your experience?
Btw I will not come back If It does not work and post about It.
I know you are helping to find a solution and I appreciate that.
When I put an old monitor In the laptop It sorted the pic automatically. Will my tv do the same or will I have to go to my control panel and click the second monitor?

Thanks for your help.

For less that four quid it's worth a punt! :)

Yes it should work fine - Dell used to include these with their Latitudes which I always thought strange when it was personal users who most often wanted to hook up their TV's as displays.

What I'm interested in is the fact your current arrangement that (if I've read this right) is connected to the VGA out on the left side works for you old screen - is this a PC monitor?  In which case that would be expected - but if it's a TV with a composite input like the set that currently isn't working then it's worth checking the make and model to see why.  If it's an LCD screen you need to get the computer to match its native resolution - if it's a CRT you need to make sure the resolution and refresh rate your laptop is using is compatible with one the TV can display.

Whther you set up the external screen separately in your graphics set up depends on how you want to use it

I'm in the UK too but probably have an earlier bedtime!

by: downingramPosted on 2009-01-19 at 14:58:29ID: 23415455

With the word "punt" I knew you was In the uk lol.
Yes the old screen Is from a PC. If I just put the 15 pin plug In the left hand side, It works without
me doing anything. I have been trying to sort this out now for over 12 hours.
As you say, for the price, I should try. If that doesnt work then I know where I stand.
I just stopped paying for skysports because I can live stream but my team Derby County are playing man u and Forest this week and I thought I could stream It then link up my laptop so It would be better see.
Also I would not have to burn the files to disc for films, Instead I could hook the laptop to the tv.
From what I have read, It Is very possible to do this. Its just a shame I have already brought 3 cables @ £8 for no reason. I am going to buy the leads you said.
