What if I was to just put a Charter cable box between my computer and the cable line and used the box to turn/tune the channels?

Browse All TopicsOK I would like to use my computer as a TIVO, to record shows from like FSN Midwest or TruTV (I have Charter "extended cable")
I would like a card that I can hook my cable line up to then go through a on screen guide and select what I would like for it to record.
It can be a PCI Card or USB.
Thanks for any advice!

What does the Charter cable box output? If it outputs s-video or composite video, you will need an analog capture card (no tuner necessary, but it must have those inputs). If you want to record from Charter cable directly, it must be in Clear QAM format (unencrypted); then you can use software like BeyondTV or SageTV to schedule recordings, along with a Clear QAM capable card, such as a Hauppauge HVR-1600 http://3btech.net/hawihv11
What about this USB device?

That USB device should work fine with clear QAM signals, just like the Avermedia Hybrid VolarMax http://www.tigerdirect.com

Unlike capture cards which can record off the cable tv set top box.
You can also use a DVR.
