Best way to copy video from my cable DVR to my computer hard drive?

Hello everybody!

I want to copy a 1 minute clip from my cable DVR and put it on my computer hard drive in any video format.

What do you recommend I do?  I can use either Windows Vista or Ubuntu.

Depends on what output options your DVR gives you. Does it have a DVD burner in it. As you can simply burn a normal DVD and just change the VOB to and mpg on your PC.

For most DVRs you will need to go analog (some devices are digital) with a usb video capture/tuner to your pc/laptop and play it thru your computer and record what you see using the software that comes with the tuner.
