Question

no sound ATI HDMI display card via AV amplifier

Asked by: candychan611

Dear Experts,

Just bought new display card to replace the onboard one, but no sound come from AV amplifier
via HDMI connection

Config:
motherboard: Intel DG965RY
display:  Gigabyte ATI 4550
OS: XP (SP2)

Drivers intalled as sequence:
1) INTEL HD Audio Driver                      (original)
2) ATI Display Driver                         (new installed)
3) ATI HD Audio Driver                        (new installed)
4) XP patch HD audio driver(kb888111xpsp2-ch) (new installed)

Once I installed the latest drivers, I choose "ATI HD audio rear output" "5.1/7.1system" as

my sound device and speaker type respectively, but nothing works finally.  I can't find any

prompt regarding "HDMI/SPDIF/Digital" further.

TV screen works well, but I hear nothing either from AV amplifier or computer speaker.  I am

sure both my amplifier config and HDMI cable works well as I tried with DVD player already.

Would you please comment what can I do in order to fix it up, many thanks!

Regards
Stanley

try uninstalling the intel HD drivers and updaing the ATI driver or downgrading the drivers.
Also disable the Intel HD auido in bios after uninstalling drivers.

I would advise installing the UAA drivers (kb888111) first and then install the soundcard drivers afterwards.

Dear experts,

I had done the following:

1)Disable the onboard sound drives at BIOS
2)reinstall the the  UAAkb888111sp2 driver
3)reinstall the ATI Audio sound drive (Ver.9.6.0.0)

Nothing happen at all!!!

If I still have some steps missing??

Hmm...I would think you still needed a sound card device in order to pass through sound.  Take a look at this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/246879-33-need-hdmi-audio-3870

Thanks Callandor:
I am still working with it.  Besides, am I actually installed the latest patch version?  Because I wonder the release year was 2004 from device manager, was it still the old one?  I am so confusing!

A video card alone is not capable of producing audio, irregardless of what cable you use for the video.  If you plan on using the HDMI cable, make sure that you have the audio from your sound card plugged into the video card.  There will be a connection somewhere on the card.  Wallah, Sound ! :)

>If you plan on using the HDMI cable, make sure that you have the audio from your sound card plugged into the video card.  There will be a connection somewhere on the card.

Cables are no longer necessary - audio is transmitted via the PCI-e bus, just like audio from the CDROM drive is transmitted through the IDE or SATA interface.

>Because I wonder the release year was 2004 from device manager, was it still the old one?

The kb888111 fix actually dates from 2004-2005, so I think that's ok.

Finally, audio came from the LCD TV speakers via HDMI cable.  But it still doesn't work with the AV amplifier, am I still have some steps missing?

possible not the right setting on the AV amp or not high enough power output for the amp.

Does your AV amp just switch sources (passthrough mode), or is it capable of decoding?  What AV amp do you have, and what are you trying to accomplish with it?

by: candychan611Posted on 2009-06-20 at 08:51:27ID: 24674181

my LCD TV was Sharp Aquos 32" and AV Amp was Onkyo TX-SR606.   Besides, did you have any idea about the articles regarding trouble with TV speaker and AV amp?  I thought I had met before and didn't pay much attention at that moment!

by: candychan611Posted on 2009-06-21 at 00:04:16ID: 24676465

Bingo!!  Problem was some Hdmi IN ports of my Onkyo606 can't handshake with ATI display card.  I switch plug from HDMI2 IN(VCR) to HDMI1 IN(DVD) and audio come out!  The bad thing is sometimes I mix up "DVD" and "VCR" mode of my Onkyo when I want to use my DVD player.
