Good format to store DVDs in?

Asked by tsukraw in Home Theater Systems, Video Editing

Hey Experts,
I have a Home Theater system running windows Vista Premium.  I currently have been ripping my DVD collection using DVDshrink but they are such large files having them in VOB.  I know i could just keep adding more hard drives but i am wondering what is the best format to convert them to and is there any free conversion utilities out there that would be able to convert a volume of movies?  I have removed all the titles so it is just the base movie.
A while ago i tried converting them to AVI file.  I am not sure if it was the conversion program that caused it but the audio part way through the movie would get off a good 10-15seconds and i want to avoid any audio issues if possible.  Any succestions?
