whoops. mistyped.
Should have been "computer needs to be IR capable". : /
Let me try this again...
The short answer is still the same... "I seriously doubt it."
Most motherboard have IR headers on them, so you can plug an IR device (receiver) to it, and then Enable it in the BIOS so it will work. Usually this will have it's own remote to use.
You will then need to load the driver/software so the OS can deal with it.
Now to your stereo remote.
Programmable remotes come with a List of Codes, that you have to input to the remote to get it to use different devices.
Each Code uses a slightly different ...errr... frequency... so when using it on one device it doesn't change other devices at the same time.
Without your remotes Code List having a code for the computers IR, the only way to know if it will work, is to run the remotes full Code Search to see if one will cause a reaction one the computer IR (most Universal remote manuals I have read, claim about 300 codes, so it can take a while to go through them).
I haven't done this, but as I understand it, you run the software for the IR (to setup the actions), and press a key, and if the program responds, you found a code that will work.
This might not be completely accurate, but should be close.
Not sure why you "seriously doubt it".
There pages all seem to say it's incredibly doable:

Partly becaus I still do not know what make/model or the age of your remote. The older it is, and/or the fewer devices it can control, the less likely it will work for this. I didn't say it won't work, I just don't know enough details to say Yes, or even Maybe.
But mostly because your computer is not currently setup for IR. No remote is going to work.
I did give a short overview of how to fix that. Once you install an IR receiver, then my answer could change.

depends on the configuration of your laptop/desktop. u will have to read the remote control's specification/user manual to understand how you can connect it with keyboard shortcuts. The exact procedure varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Did you try using microsoft ehome remote control keyboard keys??
