can i view blu-ray movies over a 720p lcd tv

I have a 32" philips 720p LCD TV and a Sony PS3 that I am using to play Blu-ray movies. I do not notice the quality or any difference when playing a blu-ray movie versus a regular movie. Could it be my TV, HDMI cable, etc. I am trying to determine if I need a bigger set or to upgrade to a 1080p TV.
