using Sony bravia (vga) for macbook pro display

I am trying to hook my macbook pro to my Sony Bravia 40inch 1080p as an external monitor.  The tv only has a vga input to the tv.  Currently this works but on the tv I can only set the resolution to 768 (h) max...  How do I achieve 1080 x 1980 screen resolution?

I have read mixed results on if a vga cable can support 1080.  It seems that many people are doing it but VGA just wont support 1080p video which is fine...

Doesn't the sony have and HDMI input? Depending on your model of MacBook Pro, Apple should have a DVI to HDMI converter that would work.

depending on your hardware (version of macbook pro) you need to get either a DVI to HDMI converter like this:

remember audio is transmitted with a minijack to minijack connector.

If its a newer model (unibody) you will need to get this:
http://store.apple.com/dk/product/TX175ZM/A?mco=MTMwMjUxMjI

im using the last one with a sony bravia tv, and i can promise it works as intended.

for this you will also need a minijack to minijack cable.

Ordering the DVI -> HDMI cable from amazon only costs 1 cent plus shipping so I ordered on through them and it works great.  Buying from apple or even newegg seems like a ripoff compared to amazons basically free cable.

i live in denmark, so the only vendor i use is www.edbpriser.dk in denmark. Everyone just seems to use newegg.com :D
