Normalize method in Media Player Classic

Hey,

Does anybody know the Normalize method in MPC - right click/audio/Options/Normalize checkbbox?

Normalization per se is supposed to not distort in any way the audio, scaling the waveform to fully fill the loudness possibilities - i.e proportionally keeping the waveform, amplifying accordingly the sound levels.
From what I understand to correctly do this, one pass through the stream is necessary, to find out the peak value and only then at the second (playback) pass to amplify on the fly.

MPC does this on any file without any previous full pass. So it would be "Gain" and not "Normalize".
Is it misnamed or by some way proper normalization occurs live/on the fly?

To put it another way I want to know if the Normalize method is distorting by a simple hardcoded value gain or is expanding the waveform without distorsions.
