Backing up System State and C: - Safe Mode or Normal Mode?

Hi there,

I have just built a brand new Windows 2003 SP1 server and wish to back it up before I start adding things to it and configuring it more.  I would like to be able to give myself a backup that I can "roll back to" so that I can get it back to this pristine state if need be.

I want to use the built in backup program within Windows 2003 to do this, and understand that I need to do a System State and C: drive backup to do this.  My question is:

1. When I do a System State backup, do I need to do this in "Safe Mode", or can this just be done while the server is running as normal?
2, When I do a C: partition backup, do I need to do this in "Safe Mode", or can this just be done while the server is running as normal?
3. If ever I need to do a restore after, do I need to start in "Safe Mode" first before I restore the System State and C: Partition?

Thanks!

Pete

Hi,
firstly  one question your server  use   as  DC  or Workgroup ?
and i  like  to know why  think about  Safe mode ?
in this case you must think about " Directory Service Directory  restore  " option when talking with "system state " backup. because no need to backup  or  boot  with safe mode  ( i thnk my knowlege corret :)

I think  by default any backup  program not configured to run in "Safe Mode". because   , i think  Tape drive not detect  with Safe mode.  because  answer is have to runn all in normal mode .

and next if you can take ASR backup  after any main changes to OS.  then thats better

Maheen

Thanks for the points, good luck!
