Question

I can't get MEDAL OF HONOR SPEARHEAD to work. GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

Asked by: guitrgirl

Hi everyone,
I can't get my medal of honor allied assault or speahead to work. The thing is that I've re-installed both games a million times and still can't get them to work. They've worked in the past but had to uninstall because i was getting to addictive to the game. When I try to start the allied assault game, the cd-rom drive will start running, the allied assault screen will pop up but nothing after that. With the spearhead game it will flicker back and forth to my default screen and the loading of the game but will eventually fail leaving me this on the screen(see below):
Also, does having two displays like when going to properties<settings>display>multiple or default monitor bad? Which of the two should I set computer to play the game?

Hi Masqueraid,
I can't get mohaa working neither any of the expansion games like spearhead or breathrough.

This is probably a stupid question but what would be the Mohaa install folder? I did however look at every file in the "folder" when you go to program files and click on Mohaa. I can't find the Mohaa.exe file. Can you please help me. Thanks.

Then we need to fix your OpenGL

Can you get your Graphics Adapter details from Device Manager and the manufacturer and date of the driver it is using?

I'm guessing from your post that this is a PIII Toshiba laptop.  Do you still have the original CDs that came with it?

by: guitrgirlPosted on 2009-01-28 at 20:09:42ID: 23494240

I attached the diagnostics that the medal of honor game compiled. Also a picture of the video cards that are installed on my computer. Below are the manufacturer and date of the drivers. Also, I don't think I have the original cds that came with the laptop. I don't think I got any or do you mean by the system restore cd-rom.

hey masquerade,
i don't know if this helps but went on the intel site to update drivers and this came up.

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-01-28 at 23:57:08ID: 23495030

Yes, updating your grphics driver is certainly worth doing

see: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-004662.htm

You are already using an Intel driver but the newer ones do have better OpenGL support - Windows has none natively. See if that helps if not there are still a few third party drivers we can try.

You may want to uninstall your current Intel Graphics driver before installing this one.

hey Masqueraid:
how do i uninstall my graphics driver? Also, if i do uninstall will i be able to reinstall this driver if i download the link the one you specified and it doesn't work? Thanks again for helping me this far.

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-02-01 at 12:16:15ID: 23522681

The driver you are using currently ( version 6.14.10.3722) is also the one you downloaded and couldn't install (because it detected you already had that version) so you have the reinstall file already in case of problems (or if you have deleted it you know where to find it on the Intel site).

To uninstall it (or any Windows driver) the quickest route is Device Manager (Right-Click My Computer, choose Properties then the tab called Hardware - Click on the Device Manger button to open it)

Near the top of the list in Device Manager you'll find an entry for Graphics Adapter, if you expand that you should see the Intel 822/855 listed.  If you right click on that entry you'll see an option to uninstall.

When you restart your computer Windows will detect the card - realise that no drivers are installed and offer to install them again automatically for you.  Cancel that process and instead run the installer I linked to above which should put the latest version in place. Then restart and see if MOHAA launches.

It's not essential to uninstall the older driver first but it reduces the risk that you get bits of the old driver conflicting with the new one.

hey masquerade,
Finally, i can play spearhead, breakthrough, airborne and call of duty BUT i can't play allied assault. I pop in the cd, click on play, the logo pops up on the screen, the cd-drive starts spinning then stops, re-spins then stops it keeps on doing this but nothing. I've come so close please help me. Thanks so much.

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-02-02 at 23:15:59ID: 23534722

Did you make the changes I suggested in my first link?  If so you now need to undo them.

by: guitrgirlPosted on 2009-02-03 at 14:26:10ID: 23543051

I can play the expansion packs but I can't play the main Medal of honor allied assault game. Do you mean by your very first post? This link http://tinyurl.com/b7ra9o? mohaa doesn't run but my spearhead and breahthrough expansion packs work.

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-02-03 at 14:36:16ID: 23543134

Yes - if you changed your settings originally then that would stop MOHAA running but the expansions would play OK.

Otherwise the quickest fix (rather than untangling the true problem) would be to uninstall the MOH games and reinstall them now that OpenGL is working OK.

by: guitrgirlPosted on 2009-02-05 at 17:46:41ID: 23566202

hey Masqueraid,
I never did change the settings when I finally updated the drivers. I reinstalled everything and changed the settings this time but it doesn't work. What do you think could be the problem?

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-02-06 at 02:34:58ID: 23568435

Sorry, I think I've confused things with the fix in that first link - you only need that if MOHAA works but none of the expansions do.

Reinstalling everything will have helped, but then changing the settings would have been unnecessary (and stopped MOHAA launching as a result)

Put the settings back as they were immediately after your reinstall

Confirm that all the expansions are working fine and that all that needs fixing is MOHAA

Post or attach the MOHAA error log (as you did with Spearhead at the top of this thread)

Thanks

by: guitrgirlPosted on 2009-02-06 at 18:35:17ID: 23576204

The thing is no error log pops up. I pop in the mohaa cd and the cd-rom starts running, the mohaa logo pops up on the computer screen but nothing after that. The cd-rom just stops scanning the disk.

by: guitrgirlPosted on 2009-02-16 at 13:58:14ID: 23654280

Masqueraid please help!!!!

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-02-20 at 11:42:03ID: 23695443

Do you have another machine you can install MOHAA on just to check the disk is OK?

Also check here for details of removing MOH games completely before reinstalling as remaining entries in the registry can interfere with the reinstall.

Plus if you don't already have it you will need this patch for the game once correctly installed (patches to version 1.11)
