Question

StarTrek:EliteForce problem

Asked by: mr76

Hi All!
I just purchased "Star Trek: Elite Force" and after installing and trying to fire up the program, I get a hesitation ending in a dialog window saying "Could not initialize GL engine." I am using a Power Mac 9600/350 running OS 9.0.4 and have all extensions that came with that. In addtion, the CD came with an openGL install that added several new extensions. It is openGL 1.0.2 (or 1.2...I'm drawing a blank right now), but regardless, it is the current openGL found on the apple site. Even after all this I continue to get the "Could not initialize GL engine." One point of mention...I don't have a 3D accelerator card installed; just the TwinTurbo 128 graphics card that came with the Mac. Is it because I don't have the 3D card that I'm getting this response? Or...is it something else entirely. I eagerly await anyone's valid thoughts on this.

Kindest Regards to all Mac users,
Don

Can you run the game in software rendering mode?

by: mr76Posted on 2000-12-18 at 08:21:25ID: 29142

haha...After all these years on a Mac I'd thought I'd heard all the 'terms' regarding OS operations and procedures, but sorry to say Weed, I'm unfamiliar with "software rendering mode." Could I possibley trouble you for a breakdown on what software rendering mode is? Most of the time spent on a Mac over the years has been anyting but gaming; StarTrek EF is for my son. Thanksjj!

by: weedPosted on 2000-12-18 at 09:01:18ID: 29259

Ah software rendering mode is a mode you can use in the game that bypasses the 3D card. All the rendering is done directly by your processor which slows the game down a bit but sometimes its a good place to start when troubleshooting. The first time you ran the program it should have asked if you wanted to use Rave or Software rendering mode. If it even let you get that far. Since the Twin Turbo doesnt support Rave you may be out of that option anyway. Also while youre at it, toss the preferences for the game.

Thanks for your feedback, Weed. It didn't give me any options whatsoever about rendering mode when I started the game, but I'll give the tossing the preferances a try when I get home from work tonight. I'll let you know tomorrow morning how it turned out. Again, thanks for your help... (also, if I were to get a 3D card, do you have a preferance or brand to suggest? Is xclaim vr a good choice?

Don

by: weedPosted on 2000-12-18 at 11:47:06ID: 29657

The xclaim VR is now an OLD card. Go with an ATI radeon or wait until after Macworld San Francisco when some new cards may be announced by nVidia. In which case, get an nVidia. Thats just whats been goin round in the rumor mill anyways. If you want to buy now go with the Radeon.

Well, after finally getting some feedback from the "star trek" site, it has been revealed to me that the minimum requirements for this game include a G3 266 or higher. Alas, I'm on a lowly 9600/350 604e. Oh well; I thank you weed for your trying on my behalf. I award you the points just for being a good guy. I also appreciate your comment on the 3d accelerator card.

Thanks again,
Don

Ahh well a 9600/350 is no machine to scoff at. I used to have one myself. What a great box. Hold on to that puppy! If you want a Voodoo 2 card for it ive got one that i cant use in my Powerbook. Its missing the passthrough cable but you should be able to find one fairly easily. Anyway if you want it for your box let me know and we'll work something out. I don't want any money for it.

No worries. EE has been buggier than a norway rat lately so its no surprise that things are a bit wacky here.
