Question

Memory problems with old game

Asked by: Toon_15

I have been trying to run an old DOS game (Master of Magic, from Microprose) on my Win98 machine. I keep getting the error that I need 2700K of extended memory to run the game. I've tried making a boot disk and changing my config.sys and autoexec.bat, but I have had no success, even when rebooting in MS-DOS mode. Anyone know how to get the game to work?

Yes!!! I loved that game!
I can't seem to access the site at the moment, but http://bumbleb.org/ developed a terrific boot disk.

But I did find it!
Go to home of the-underdogs
http://community.the-underdogs.org/pub/bootdisks/
Download "whive12"

BTW- I found it through the-underdogs forum:
http://www.the-underdogs.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17074&sid=d2b122179ea7bb8381c702425f1f6a50
and that through:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=bumbleb+boot+disk&btnG=Google+Search

I miss the good old days <sniff>,

Hrm...I tried using that boot disk but it didn't seem to help. Using the QEMM option made my computer run really slow, and then I tried to run the game and got an error message: "Check hardware settings" ... whatever that means.

And using the other options on the boot disk I got the same "You must have at least 2700K of expanded memory" error.

Still looking for a way to get this stupid game to run on my comp.

"Check hardware settings" sounds like you have to configure your sound card. The usual factory defaults for the sound card are: address=220, IRQ=7 or 9 & DMA=1 (at least on SoundBlaster...), but...

You can try setting it to "no sound" to see if this is actually the problem. If it is:
* There usually is an auto-config feature in the setup. Try using that.
* If not, try booting into windows and checking your hardware settings (I don't remember what win98 tells you).
* If windows won't tell your, download a copy of "Fresh Diagnose" (freeware) from http://www.freshdiagnose.com/ and check your sound card there.
* If none of those works, you can try setting it manually with the numbers I posted above.

If all else fails, try to see if there's something on the README file on this problem.

Let me know if nothing works, I'll see what else I can come up with.

I set the game to "No Sound" but I'm still not getting it to work. Now it just seems to freeze when I try to run the game.

That doesn't sound very good :-(
If I remember correctly, there are two executables in MOM: One with the openning sequence and the other takes you right to the game. Have you tried both?
Could you be missing or have a corrupt file? During installation were there any errors? You did use the installation process, right?

by: Toon_15Posted on 2002-12-11 at 08:16:01ID: 7566745

I tried both. I didn't see any errors during installation. I suppose I could have a corrupt file in there, I haven't tried to use the CD in a couple of years. About to give up on ever getting this game to work.

I have been having similar problems with a 1993 fury of the furries game. The memory problem is because your computer has such a large memory compared to what the game is used to, it goes into negatives. So if you have a computer with very low hard disk memory, or if you can still buy a hard disk with very little memory, the game such work... in theory. It might be worth asking at any computer stores???

I can run MOM perfectly under my win98 SE. My config.sys and autoexec.bat do not contain any command related to memory management (like himem.sys or emm386.exe). And the PIF for the game executable states "Auto" for all memory options...

How is your config?

Well there COULD be something with your memory.

Try running MEMMAKER (in the windows directory) this nifty little tool will let you alter the way your computer divides the available memory. I've used it succesfully many times on old dos games.

just make sure you answer the questions right, and if you don't need anything then DON't use it.. this will take up memory wich can be divided differently.

Hope it helps

This may be a stretch, but have you tried running it under an MS-DOS prompt?  This will usually circumvent the program's demands for extended memory.  You can create a DOS shortcut to the program's executable file, then right click the shortcut and view the properties.

Make sure that all your memory settings are set to auto.  Make sure "allow screen saver" is not checked.  Turn on "bitmap only" under the font settings.  Disable "quick edit" and other editing options.  Disable all shortcut keys besides "ALT-ENTER", then try running the program.

You could try doing a web search for sci tech display doctor.  It has a utility that will update univbe and vesa drivers on a computer.  This might help with graphic performance
