well are you not going above the game requiremenets ??...............usually low system creates such problem ...but the game is preety older and i think i have ran it on 64 Mb of Ram ......make sure you dont have large amount of Ram with your Pc ........or u have a really high costed sound card which might be not compatable with the game !!!
Just because its an older game doesnt mean you dont need to update to the newest drivers.
New cards come out without supporting older features and they can add support through drivers on a later date.
Download the newest drivers from ati, look up what your soundcard is in the device manager and download the drivers for that also.
Oh, I just found a patch on konami's website.
METAL GEAR SOLID SUBSTANCE™
+ PC ATI SUPPORT PATCH
This patch allows the game to operate in a RADEON series environment (RADEON 8500 or higher).
Apparently it doesnt run on a radeon 8500 and higher without the patch.
Try downloading and installing it from here:
http://www.konami.com/gs/p
My bad about the msg2 patch. It was the only one i found on konami, but now I found out microsoft actually released the pc game. I cant find any sort of patches on their website for the life of me though. I am pretty sure its the same issue as msg2 had. Im wondering if microsoft just stopped supporting it since its pretty old.
" are you SURE it is Metal Gear Solid 1, and not MGS 2: substance? I can't find the origional MGS for the PC anywhere, let alone a patch."
Metal Gear Solid 1 was released for the PC, just by microsoft games studios instead of konami.
I cant find a page for it anywhere on their site. I think its just too old and they stopped supporting it.
Its from like 1998-2000. You can find some articles on their knowledge base though:

I got two ideas for you to try from searching around. Try right clicking on the exe to go to properties, and change it to run in windows 98 compatibility mode. The other idea is there is spose to be a "Software Mode" you can set the game to run with. I assume its in the actual game's options. Try using that also.
Btw, I have to ask since its such an old game. Did you actually buy it, or is this a copy you downloaded off some website. If you dont have the full game cd that you bought, this could be the reason your video doesnt work. Many downloaded versions wont include the extra's like video in order to save on size.
Ok I tried the compitability mode and it did not help.
software mode just makes the game unplayable in its uglyness.
the game was not published\released by Microsoft. it has no mention of it in the game (as far as iv checked) I guess konami are responsible for the port as well as the PS1 version.
on the subject of the originality of the copy, well, yes I have downloaded it but the problem is that it sometimes shows random seconds in the movie AND I do hear all the sound\music\conversation that's in it. its gotta be some something with the video card.
I'v checked some forums on this subject and there are lots of glitches with the PC version, most of them are video card issues and konami doesnt intend to realeas any fixes for it. people are trying to get some homemade drivers for it but it's not stable. in any case iv decided to drop off this and downloaded the PS1 version and play it on an emulator.
so for all your work, I thank you. sorry it was in vain (u still get the points)
Thanks again everyone,
No_Problem.

Theres a gamespot review from 2000, if you look at that it lists Microsoft as the publisher.
Konami was the original developer, but it seems like they gave the rights to microsoft to release it on the PC.
Thats for MGS 1, Konami actually released MGS 2 on its own. That seems to be why theres a MSG2 patch on their site, but no patch for MGS1

Sound like it is - at least partially - a video codec problem
om/kb/2836 52/en-us (Ligos Codec)
com/detail /LSXMPEG_P layer/ 1011 585802/1
om/kb/2989 91/en-us (Indeo Codec)
downloads/ 30d.html
First check:
- XP SP2? If not you need DirectX 9.0c
- Latest ATI Catalyst drivers?
- Latest sound drivers for your machine?
>>it doesnt show movies (just a green rectangle)
http://support.microsoft.c
Download the Ligos LSX-MPEG codec from here (discontinued by Ligos in 2002)
http://fileforum.betanews.
http://support.microsoft.c
Download the Intel Indeo codec from here:
http://www.moviecodec.com/
Only install this if the Ligos codec install doesn't help.
