Question

Need for Speed Carbon, will it run on Vista HP?

Asked by: chrisfixit

Neighbor has just bought Need for Speed Carbon for her young son's birthday tomorrow - but it falls over on her Vista HP laptop as soon as you try to run it 'NFSC.exe has stopped working'.

I notice that the sticker says XP/2K but is there any way to get it to work in Vista? - I've tried XP Compatibility Mode but same problem.

Yes it can be run, but it has quite tough hardware requirements, so your neighbours notebook might either not have a compatible graphics card (Shader 2.0) or not enough RAM.

Here is a site - the vista hp requirements are a bit further in the article, but they are quite high.

Thanks - the requirements are met - it has 3GB RAM, T3400 dual Core processer and Intel Mobile 4500M graphics which support Directx-10 BUT the game still won't run :-(

Have you tried pushing the game EXE into compatibility mode for Win98 (Not XP SP2)?
Do you have the 4500M running on Microsoft's drivers or Intel's?

Is the gfx ram set to at least 128 MB?  Is it using a WDDM driver? Did the gfx card pass the aero acceptance test?

Tried Win98 compatibility.. no luck.. it has Intel drivers..7.15.10.1527 11/07/2008

Just checking that you have changed the compatibility mode for the .exe and you are launching from it?

If you are launching from a shortcut you'll need to change compatibility mode for this and anything else in the "chain". It's worth trying win95 as well but if 98 doesn't work I wouldn't hold my breath.
Have you patched the game?
Do you get an error log generated?

by: chrisfixitPosted on 2009-10-17 at 10:04:29ID: 25596497

Right, how do I know if it's a WDDM driver?

Aero works ,3D Gaming Graphics performance rating 3.4.

I would try to update the graphics driver, it seems to be fairly old, maybe there is a newer version available.

Checking you are patched to NFSC 1.4?

Latest Intel Mobile 4 driver for Vista HP 32 (7.15.10.1908 - 09/15/2009)

Increase your virtual memory settings  (make a note of what Windows is using already so if this doesn't help you can put it back where it was before!)

Try running the NFSC.EXE with enhanced admin rights (Right-click - Run as administrator)

Do you get the same NFSC.EXE 0.0.0.0. error?

yep, - it runs perfectly on my Dell laptop with W7 but I have Geforce Go7900s - so I don't think it is a Vista problem and it's not RAM or processor so it must be that the Intel Graphics doesn't have enough dedicated memory - just uses shared and the game doesn't like it.
