Question

LAN game safe for work?

Asked by: MCPJoe

Anyone know of any good LAN games that are preferable free or have a decent free demo that you can play over a LAN, say at work at lunch time with co-workers.  Something that won't use much internet bandwidth if any at all, and is safe for work?  I often find myself working during lunch and would rather have some fun with my co-workers at lunch.  Any suggestions?  Don't care what kind of game it is.

Good Idea!
First check that your employers/IT Dept are happy with you playing LAN during your breaks.
Corporate IT policies vary hugely from site to site.  You may need their help
& certainly if they don't know about it there will be more problems when they find out!

Safety will be paramount.  You need to install software and that means it needs to be from a reliable source and won't be installing anything on your network which could damage either the network or the company.  You also need to prevent it from dialling out of the LAN unless this is OK with the company.

Thanks.  I am the Sr. Engineer at my company, its ok for us to play during breaks.  I am looking for suggestions on what to play, something as I stated in the original post and that goes along the lines of what you mentioned.  Any game suggestions?

Just checking ;)

TBH depends what you like. I have Quake in the server room for "team building" purposes but something like Netris would also work

by: MCPJoePosted on 2007-02-06 at 11:26:21ID: 18478947

I think I found the netris game you mentioned, it works for $30 and costs $5 to register.  Any other suggestions?

by: MCPJoePosted on 2007-02-06 at 11:26:42ID: 18478950

I meant it works for 30 days, and costs $5, ignore that dollar sign by the 30

LAN based FPS Abandonware? http://www.the-underdogs.info/genre.php?name=Action&subgen=Multiplayer%20shooter

I'm sure the version of Netris I have is a freeware product (it's certainly playing well after 30 days) I'll check.

Actually thinking about it I'm assuming you want Windows games - Netris is Unix

And this one is great fun, low bandwidth multilayer LAN option built in.

Yes Windows games, something that will run on XP Pro, preferably free or with a decent trial/demo.

by: MCPJoePosted on 2007-02-06 at 11:50:59ID: 18479157

Can't seem to download typing of the dead without buying a download account, and I did find a windows version of netris, but its not a LAN game.

Sorry didn't check the link :(

Try this one:
http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4973
It's a bit difficult to find the download link (it's in "where to get it" after the Bittorrent reference, 112MB)

Here's the Typing of the Dead Wiki so you know what you're getting (All this and typing practice too!)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Typing_of_the_Dead

I'll investigate the Netris program.  It's still on the system here and multiplayer.

This probably sounds pretty lame, but did you know that you can play Hearts over the network?

by: jayneePosted on 2007-02-11 at 03:06:27ID: 18509826

Whoops - sorry, I should have checked. Microsoft took out the LAN play option when it ported to XP.

My hubby and I play Blizzard's Diablo II over our home lan (using direct IP addressing) - you can pick it up pretty cheaply these days.  Maybe a bit addictive for just a lunch hour, tho' : )

by: MCPJoePosted on 2007-02-12 at 11:44:30ID: 18517801

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I did find a windows version of netris that is fun, but its a 30 day demo.  It only cost $5 to register, so that may be the ticket, but not sure yet.  I'm still open to suggestions.

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2007-02-12 at 12:26:00ID: 18518174

Some others to have a look at.  Sorry Netris is now a fully fledged shareware product (but is probably worth the 5 bucks!)

free game and loadsa fun! Could host it on your LAN, so it wouldnt take up any internet bandwidth

by: MCPJoePosted on 2007-02-13 at 05:16:23ID: 18522290

WOW WOW WOW, I have to say so far, my favorites are Netris and Armagetron!  These are totally cool games.  We are going to try Armagetron at lunch time today with a few people on our LAN.  I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I suggest you take a look at Soldat.  Entirely free (with option to register for more options if you want) and excellent for LAN play.

It's a small 2D shooter game, and has options for a variety of gamestyles such as capture the flag, etc. and you can set up teams so that it is co-op with your coworkers or versus.

Thanks - Re: Soldat - I suspect this one dials out but I may be wrong about that.

Enjoy :)
