NOTE: I, EE, or Sony, take no responsibly if this harms your system. Sony does not recommend doing the fan test for ordinary users, but I have not heard of any damage being done to your system after doing this. Attempt at own risk.Hi!

In this article I will be talking about how to run a fan test on your PlayStation 3, whether it be the 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB or the 120GB Slim, and some tips about having good airflow for your system.

First, the fan test. I think running this fan test once a month should keep the dust out of your system for better airflow.

Benefits of running the test:
- The most obvious reason: to test the fan!
- It cleans out all the dust that is inside your system.
- To cool it down quickly

20GB/60GB/80GB procedure:
Step 1: Pick up and tip your system so that the PlayStation 3 writing on the top faces to the right.
Step 2: Turn your system on.
Step 3: The fan should start spinning faster. This is the fan test.
Step 4: To end the fan test, simply flip your system the other way (so that the writing on top faces to the left).

It has been reported that sometimes it states on the screen that your system is overheating. If it states this while doing the fan test, don't worry, it's just the fan test!

40GB procedure:
Step 1: Make sure that your system is plugged in but leave it off.
Step 2: Hold the eject button on your system.
Step 3: While holding eject, turn the switch at the back of your system on.
Step 4: When you hear the fan spinning faster, you can take your finger off the eject button.
Step 5: The fan test ends automatically after somewhere between 30-45 seconds.

Slim procedure:
Step 1: Unplug your system.
Step 2: While plugging it back in, hold the eject button.
Step 3: When you hear the fan spinning faster, you can take your finger off the eject button.
Step 4: The fan test ends automatically after somewhere between 30-45 seconds.

Now for the airflow tips.
First, consider the location of your system. It is not recommended to keep your PS3 in a cabinet while being used. This could cause your system to overheat which may, quite possibly, warp the motherboard. It's best to keep the PS3 out of any closed spaces while being used. Next, make sure that nothing is directly covering the air vents (they are located on the back of your system). Doing these things will help your PS3 system not to overheat.

I hope this article has helped you keep your system cool!

Thanks!
