The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Nintendo WFC Connection Problems (Error 61020)

Tags: nintendo, 61020, error, wfc, connection
I am trying to use my Nintendo DS to access Nintendo WFC, but keep getting disconnected.  I am getting error message #61020.  I'm using the Nintendo WiFi USB Adapter, but it doesn't seem to keep a connection with my DS Lite or Wii.  I am running Windows XP.  I'm using Norton 2007 Internet Security, but still get the same results, even when it's disabled.  What do I do to fix this?

No clue?

Is your setup:
                                                                                                 DS Lite
                                                                                                  /
Internet - (wire) - XP PC - (wire) - USB Adapter - (Wireless)
                                                                                                  \
                                                                                                  Wii

Or are you behind a router?

Can you connect in game at all - even if you lose the connection?

Does the test connection work?

What distance from your PC are the consoles?

Are there any other wireless devices in range?

07.27.2007 at 06:55AM PDT, ID: 19582255
That seems to be the way my setup is, unless you count the cable modem between the internet and pc.  I am not behind a router.  In the game, it tells me that I have connected to an access point, but couldn't connect to WFC.  The test connection works when I setup my connection before starting the game.  There are no other wireless devices in range.  It seems that it can connect, but loses the connection before it can do anything in the game.

07.31.2007 at 07:27AM PDT, ID: 19600640
Any ideas?

08.02.2007 at 11:48AM PDT, ID: 19619734
The problem may be that since you don't have a router, your Wii and DS aren't able to get their own IP addresses. Most ISPs these days only provide each subscriber with a single public address.

Also, what kind of wireless adaptor are you using? Is just a regular wireless PCI Card or USB adaptor or is something specifically from Nintendo?

08.02.2007 at 02:44PM PDT, ID: 19621159
I am using the Nintendo USB WiFi Adapter.  I've tried assigning them an IP address on my network and enabling Internet Connection Sharing for them, but that doesn't seem to work either.    I don't think it's becuase of only having one IP address from my ISP, because there are tons of people with these things that aren't having any problems.  Does that help?

08.03.2007 at 09:19AM PDT, ID: 19626364
Just a suggestion. Turn of Norton all together and try your connection. Every place that I can see or find about this problem points into 2 places. Router or Nintendos Connection is temporarily down.

Some users resolutions to this problem are:
- If router involved upgrade firmware
- temp disable firewall
- change access point speed from auto to a lower speed, ie: 11mb or even slower
- Wireless security should be changed to WEP instead of WPA

Also here is some blurbage from Nintendo's Site:
Error Code: 60000-69999

Our experience shows that error messages within this range are typically caused by temporary network outages with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. If there is a problem with the network, our technicianýs will work to get the service back up as soon as possible. Please retry your connection later.

If you are connecting to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for the first time, or the problem has not resolved itself after a few hours, there could be an incompatibility with your wireless home network. You may want to try the following:

* Ensure your router has the latest firmware installed. Visit your router manufacturers website and look for any updated firmware that may be available (these are typically found under downloads or by searching for your particular model number). Contact your router manufacturer for additional assistance.

* If your router or modem has a built-in firewall, you may want to try and lower the security settings*, as they could be interfering with a successful connection. How to do this will vary brand and model, so consult the manual or the manufacturer of your router or modem for assistance.

If after trying the above steps you are still unable to successfully login or play on the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, it is possible that your wireless home network is not compatible with the Nintendo DS or Nintendo WFC. We suggest purchasing a compatible router (click here for a list of routers weve tested and ranked), or the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector. (Please note that if your modem is blocking the connection, the USB Connector will not work.)

Don't forget that NWFC needs free access to ALL your UDP ports and TCP access to 80, 443, 28910, 29900, 29901 & 29920 so you may still have Windows Firewall or other security settings stopping the WiFi adapter drivers getting out of your system.

Nintendo tools for checking your system:
============================
1) Test your network is OK:
http://www.nintendowifi.com/troubleshooting/NetworkTest.jsp

2) Check you are not firewalling the connection:
http://www.nintendowifi.com/consumerservice/showTopic.do?topicId=Firewall_Help_USB&catId=USB

3) Make certain you are using the latest drivers for the adaptor:

Sorry, jsp on the Nintendo site stops direct linking :(

08.03.2007 at 07:24PM PDT, ID: 19629702
I've tried it with both Norton Firewall and Windows Firewall completely turned off, but to no avail.
How do I change the access point's speed?
I don't have a router of any sort.  I don't think I can change the wireless security on the Nintendo adapter.  If so, how?
The only wireless device I own is the Nintendo USB WiFi Adapter, the Nintedo DS, and the Nintendo Wii.

08.06.2007 at 04:43PM PDT, ID: 19642424
Sorry not much more can give to this. In your case your scenario should be:
Internet/Modem (log in to modem to see if there is any routing capabilities)
-
PC (Disable Windows Firewall and Norton for testing purposes)
-
USB WiFi Adapter (Not much to it, but confirm connection and internet access)
Also Internet Sharing is enabled
-
DS/Wii (Confirm with the Wii you have connection)

Last resort, call Nintendo and tell them you are having problems with your Wii AND DS connecting with your USB WiFi. All Nintendo products and if no one here was able to help, then maybe they have some insider information that can help.

12.28.2007 at 12:18PM PST, ID: 20544770
Another thing to make sure of, is that you are not surrounding your Wii/DS with other devices that could interfere with the frequency, such as microwaves, cell phones, cordless phones. These can jack up the frequency and can cause connection issues.

01.07.2008 at 07:59AM PST, ID: 20600395
Honestly, I think you're dealing with problems that are directly related to the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB adaptor.  I think it would be best if you spent the 40 bucks or so and got a decent Wireless G router from Dlink or Linksys.  In my experience, the Wi and the DSes in my home do MUCH better now that we're all setup on a dedicated router with the windows firewall turned off.  The thruput is better and we're not having any of the issues that we had before with games like MarioKart DS or Pokemon Diamond/Pearl just disconnecting randomly.  A router will help secure your home network better (humble opinion) and with the norton security turned off AND windows firewall relaxed, your computer will be happier and your wireless devices (the Wi and the DS) will be happier.

Just remember that there is NO support for the DS when you use higher level security on your wireless network.  Stick to the WPA it works well.

Good Luck.

01.07.2008 at 09:46AM PST, ID: 20601291
Just a note, the DS doesn't support WPA. Only WEP. And here is a note from their webpage regarding the USB Adapter.
"Important: The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector has been discontinued until further notice. As an alternative for on-line access, DS owners can use a standard wireless route. Please click here for more information"
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wfc/en_na/ds/faqOverview.jsp#have_to_buy_usb

So sorry for all the headache it has/had caused. So easy solution would be purchase a wireless router if you havent already and set it up for WEP not WPA. also since this question is about 6 months old, may want to close it also.
Accepted Solution

Also make sure you update the firmware of the router you get, It will help a lot.

02.04.2008 at 03:55PM PST, ID: 20819420
I never got this to work.  I finally just upgraded my network to wireless and now I don't need the adapter.  Thanks for your help though.
