Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. how to get my .avi to play in my PS3?

i have been watching movies that i copy from my computer to a usb stick. i use the usb stick to play movies on my ps3. i have a few .avi files that dont work in my ps3. the error i get from the ps3 is "the data type is not supported"

the .avi also doesnt play in a clean winxp box, just the music plays but no video. on my laptop it plays fine but i have divX and maybe other codecs installed.

hpw can i convert these files to a normal .avi or a format my ps3 will play
