The Xbox 360 Development Kit that Barthax is referring to is definitely something for a hardcore audience:

Unfortunately, you can't surf the Internet with the Xbox 360 just yet, but since that capability exists in both the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Wii, I'm confident that we will eventually see it on the Xbox 360 as well.
In my opinion, the the console's best feature is the Xbox Live environment, with a friends list that stays active throughout every game, or even while you are watching a movie!
One thing to keep in mind is that the 360 doesn't have an option for HDMI output, so the quality of the video cables that you choose WILL make a difference. I would recommend the Monster GameLink™ 360 Component Video A/V Cables. The Monster brand is typically a bit more expensive, but they are also the best quality that you can find...

Last but not least, you can use a USB keyboard with the console, and there is even a new product called the XFPS 360 that will allow you to use a customized keyboard/mouse combination for FPS games...

Hope that helps out a bit!

With Microsoft releasing a free version of the development environment (I forget the name off hand), it shouldn't take long for a swathe of third-party freebies. :D
Hunting for the words "xbox" "360" and "homebrew" together throws up loads of stuff (though mainly game-based).
