Browse All TopicsHey guys. I have spent the last couple of hours trying to get my Playstation 3's media center to work. I can play MP3s from my PS3 just fine now. I can't however play movies. They are formatted correctly. I have actually tried both MP4 and Mpeg-2. I have enabled Media Sharing on my Windows Media Player on my Vista PC. Whenever I browse (From the PS3) to the folder that my movies are stored (on my PC), I get two errors. One on my PC and one on my PS3.
On PS3:
Media Server Error: A DNLA protocol error (501) has occurred. (The Error number here changes everytime. I have seen 2101, 501, and -1)
And then: You have been disconnected from the Media Server
On PC:
Windows Host Process (rundll32) has stopped working
Any help is greatly appreciated!

From the info I've read, they say it can't be done.
Q. Can the PS3 stream videos, movies, pictures, etc., from a PC?
A. No, not currently. This is something we really wanted to see, but they're just not prepared to do yet. If you're Japanese, however, you can download video via P-TV on So-net.

Assuming you have the 1.8 firmware update are you just using WMP11 as the DLNA Media Server?
Make sure you have this set up:
http://manuals.playstation
And get a file which you know is MPEG-1 to stream from the media server.
There are a variety of Free & OpenSource Media servers available if you have problems getting WMP setup to begin with. If you had Nero bundled with a DVD player you may have their version installed already.

Sounds like a stupid answer, but just before you go ahead with any detailed solution could you try coping the files to a USB flash drive or media card (60GB model only has the memory card slots) and make 100% sure that they run from there just so you know you have working video files. I say this only becuase it doesn't make much sense that you are able to stream mp3's and not video from the same source.
Sorry, ignore my last comment here is you solution.

Make sure that the folder the videos are in has permissions for the PS3 to read and write to it.
To do this right click the folder they are in click properties and then the security tab. From there you can edit the permissions. If you are not worried about max security then just go ahead and set the permission to everyone allow write. That should solve it.
Hi Rogiee, I have been setting this up for the last few days and can also suggest you may want to try TVersity (http://tversity.com).
Pretty easy to set up, free and it will do automatic transcoding for any files that the PS3 can't read natively.

WMP really doesn't like MPEG-2 unless you have a plugin like Power DVD or similar MPEG-2 plugin.
Also you have to be aware specifically which type of MP4 files you are trying to play -- there are many, so you need to know what they are. WMP doesn't really like MPEG-4 either.
You could try another player or get the necessary plugin -- or convert the files to a high resolution WMV format.
