Browse All Topicsmy PlayStation 3 is one of the unlucky ones. Seems like it can't detect any inserted disks. So I'm planning on replacing the laser. But before I do I have a couple of questions.
I noticed that there different laser versions if I'm correct. Would it matter which one I get? should I get same as the one in my system or it don't really matter?
theres the KES-400AAA and KEM-410ACA.. Seems like KES is newer. I don't know which one is installed in my PS3. Its a 80gb, the one that came bundled with Motor Storm game.
I looked around the internet and saw some sites that sell the laser parts, but skeptical about some of them. Because I read around some forums the people say they got ripped off, like new parts are actually just used parts.
Is there some that are actually legit?

There are two different versions: first one with a single laser (400...), second one with two lasers (410...). You have to take a look in your PS/3 to check which one is built in. The difference between KES and KEM afaik is that the first is just the laser unit whereas KEM is the laser plus the metal frame.

Actually alot of the sites are very legit, but may be an individual or small company trying to expand into a new area to make a little bit more of a profit. With some of the smaller sites/companies they actually don't know what people need, they would just carry a small inventory.
My personal practice for repairing equipment is to always try and use the exact same equipment/model. Looking at the newer model, need to make sure that it has the same type of connections, and i'm pretty sure the OS will handle the drivers needed.
All in all, I still also recommend going back to the Manufacturer for guaranteed work. Sony to ensure that everything is properly replaced, updated, and everything matches. And of course the work is guarantted.
